NLC Kicks Off ACCD Psychology Forum

(October 8, 2008) The ACCD Psychology Forum will hold its first official gathering on Saturday, October 11th at Northeast Lakeview College’s Pat Booker campus (8300 Pat Booker Rd). The conference will include a keynote address by Dr. Laura King, Professor of Psychology at the University of Missouri, and author of The Science of Psychology: An Appreciative View.
The ACCD Psychology Forum is funded by a grant from the Association for Psychological Science aimed at public awareness and the teaching of psychology, and has also received funds from ACCD’s Achieving the Dream initiative. The forum will provide opportunities for faculty to discuss issues facing ACCD psychology students, share techniques in the teaching of psychology at the community college level, and learn innovative teaching methods.
The main goals of the ACCD Psychology Forum are to:
- 1. improve communication between ACCD psychology faculty at the colleges;
- 2. promote a better understanding of ACCD students and their needs and issues;
- 3. provide professional development for ACCD psychology faculty; and
- 4. develop relationships with faculty at four-year institution in the San Antonio area to facilitate the transfer process for psychology majors
Historically, there have been no formal structures that convene psychology faculty members across the District to facilitate the exchange of experience, knowledge and skills as it pertains to the practice of teaching psychology. The ACCD Psychology Forum aims to facilitate communication among psychology faculty members of the ACCD who experience comparable challenges as they teach community college students.
