Alamo Colleges’ Lacy Hampton Named SBA District Minority Small Business Champion of the Year
Alamo Colleges SMWBE (Small, Minority, Women, and Business Enterprises) Diversity Administrator Lacy Hampton has been named District Minority Small Business Champion of the year by the San Antonio Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
Hampton was selected by a panel of judges from SBA and will be recognized during this year’s Small Business Week Celebration at the University of Texas at San Antonio Downtown Campus on May 12.
During his tenure with the Facilities Department of the Alamo Colleges, Hampton has been active in insuring the high standards of minority participation for Alamo Colleges' construction projects. His appointment came during the Colleges’ $450 million bond issue and a major Capital Improvement Program which saw 22 new buildings constructed.
“I am honored to be recognized in this way by the SBA,” said Hampton. “This recognition further affirms for me the concept of minority participation and clarifies in my mind why I do what I do.”
Hampton, who holds a Masters in Business Administration from St. Mary’s University, has been active as a participant and presenter at numerous industry meetings. Among the groups he has interacted with are the Hispanic Contractors Association, Business Opportunities for Texans (BOTS), Alamo City Black Chamber of Commerce, the Hispanic Chamber, and several other organizations that support SMWBE businesses.
The criteria for selecting the Minority Small Business Champion are:
- Volunteer efforts beyond business/professional responsibilities to advance minority small business interests within the community, state and/or nation.
- Demonstrated efforts to improve conditions in the minority small business community as a whole, not solely for individual personal advancement.
- Voluntary provision of professional services to the minority small business community in a legal, legislative, managerial or financial capacity.
- Demonstrated accomplishments in advising minority small business groups of opportunities within the overall business community.
- Other accomplishments demonstrating the nominee’s merit as an effective advocate for minority small business interests.
According to Pamela Sapia, director of the San Antonio SBA office, “We have known Lacy for a long time. He has always been there, serving on committees and talking to small business owners and partnering with SBA and other community organizations to support and provide opportunities to the community.”
“Lacy has been an integral part of our operations since he came on board,” said Alamo Colleges Associate Vice President of Facilities John Strybos. “His dedication to increasing minority participation is unquestionable, and his enthusiasm for his work is contagious. We are proud of Lacy and his accomplishments.”
