Alamo Colleges Accept Alamo Area Council Of Governments 2009 Governmental Regional Project Of The Year Award

At an awards ceremony June 24, Alamo Colleges Board of Trustees Chairman Denver McClendon and Chancellor Dr. Bruce H. Leslie accepted the 2009 Governmental Regional Project of the Year award in recognition of the Alamo Colleges three rural education centers. Also attending the awards ceremony were representatives of the Alamo Colleges’ partners in the rural centers. Ellen Williams represented superintendent Dan Troxell of the Kerrville ISD, while Kathy Nossaman represented the CTTC Advisory Committee. David Vincent, superintendent of the Floresville ISD, and Mariano Sanchez represented the Floresville Center partners.
“We would like to thank our partners and county officials for recognizing the significance of our rural centers in promoting economic development and educational attainment for their communities,” said Leslie.
“We are pleased to have the opportunity to expand our high quality educational programs to additional counties in our service area,” added McClendon.
The Alamo Colleges were nominated for the award by Jesse Perez, executive director of the Floresville Economic Development Corporation, for “helping rural Texas communities in Wilson, Comal, Guadalupe and Kerr counties to obtain a training facility in their counties.”
The Alamo Colleges operate the Central Texas Technology Center (CTTC) in New Braunfels and the Greater Kerrville Alamo College Center in Kerrville, and are in the process of staffing the Floresville Early College - Alamo Colleges Center in Floresville. The three centers are projected to enroll more than 3,400 students by fall 2010. The centers offer academic college courses for transfer to a four-year university, and workforce education courses and dual credit classes leading to careers in high-demand occupations.
