Students Complete Pre-College Academic Boot Camp

(August 10, 2009) Recent high school graduates began a two-week Pre-College Academic Boot Camp on July 27th at Northeast Lakeview College. Today, they graduated.
The camp was designed to provide recent high school graduates with an opportunity to review fundamental concepts in reading, English, and math and prepare them with the skills needed to successfully begin college. In addition to completing the program, students received the textbooks and software currently used in the College courses to use as they continue their college career. Those students graduating today also received a $200 stipend.
The camp is part of the $221,302 TG Public Benefit Program Making the College Connection grant Northeast Lakeview College received to benefit high school seniors from Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City, Marion, and Seguin ISD’s. Making the College Connection is designed to streamline the transition from high school to college and to provide financial support for underserved and underrepresented students. Over 125 scholarships have been awarded to 2009 high school seniors from these three school districts to attend Northeast Lakeview College in Fall 2009.
This is the second year that Northeast Lakeview College has offered this Summer Boot Camp to seniors. Last summer, 29 Judson ISD students attended, resulting in 75% of the participants placing out of at least one developmental course and 14% placing out of all developmental courses and enrolling directly into college-level courses. This year, the program doubled in size, with more than 55 students enrolled.
