SAN ANTONIO (Aug. 10, 2009) --- St. Philip’s College hosts its 2009 Student Orientation Aug. 21 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Watson Fine Arts Center on 1801 Martin Luther King Drive.

This program will inform new and returning students and their family members and guests on college student support programs and services for the fall 2009—2010 Academic Year, the new “alamo” email and web addresses, new college logo, new degree programs such as Alternative Energy and Power Generation, new facilities to include a $49 million Welcome Center, Center for Learning Resources and Center for Health Sciences; and a $4.7 million Diesel Technology Center and Lab. A free lunch for orientation attendees will be served at 11:30 a.m. under the Heritage Pavilion at the college.

“Our orientation program will help motivate students to make a successful transition to college life,” said Dr. Ruben Izaguirre, Director of Student Support Services at St. Philip’s College. “The events we have planned introduce students to college leadership in addition to highlighting the best of the college’s newest and most asked-about programs or services,” Dr. Izaguirre said. “Our program also orients new students to the campus and several new buildings that will be important to their education. We will encourage our new students to enjoy the full range of campus activities and services,” Dr. Izaguirre said.

The keynote speaker is Brenda Combs, an elementary school educator and motivational speaker whose compelling personal story of how she used education to better herself and the lives of others has been the subject of national media interest.

“Ms. Combs brings a unique understanding of the challenges students face, and she will use her experience to inspire and teach the incoming class at St. Philip’s College,” said Dr. Izaguirre.

Following the keynote address, students and guests are invited to join campus tours or seminars on privacy laws, college success, and adjusting to college life.

A College Expo will also be hosted from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Expo consists of college departments highlighting college degree programs or services.
