SAN ANTONIO, Aug. 25, 2009 – AT&T* today announced the creation of approximately 200 new jobs in San Antonio. The AT&T U-verse Technical Support Center, set to open in early to middle 2010, will employ approximately 200 Technical Service Representatives and managers in high-tech jobs to assist AT&T U-verse and Advanced TV subscribers across the U.S.

"This new Technical Support Center in San Antonio demonstrates our commitment to invest in our employees and our communities by creating and preserving high-tech jobs that pay well, have good benefits and provide opportunities for advancement and training," said John Stankey, president and CEO of AT&T Operations. “I applaud the cooperation of city and community college officials who have worked with us to make this happen.”

AT&T, in partnership with the City of San Antonio and The Alamo Colleges, identified an opportunity to develop a program in which students will be trained for the highly skilled positions that the technical support center will demand. AT&T worked with The Alamo Colleges to design and develop the core curriculum for the six-week course. The City of San Antonio committed

resources, including funding, to ensure the program is a success. The first students will enroll in these courses in November.

“We are excited for the opportunity to work with AT&T and have a part in training highly qualified workers in the technology field,” said Bruce Leslie, Chancellor of The Alamo Colleges. “We believe this program, spearheaded by AT&T and the City of San Antonio, will be a model for other colleges around the country.”

“Investing in a well-educated workforce may be the single most important thing we can do to help America remain the leader in a digital, global economy,” said Stankey.

AT&T has a long history of supporting education. Last year, AT&T launched AT&T Aspire, a $100 million philanthropic program to help strengthen student success and workforce readiness. As part of this commitment, AT&T awarded 17 grants in Texas last year valued at $3.6 million.

The program developed at The Alamo Colleges will address the future need for highly qualified workers at this Technical Support Center – and others like it.

“AT&T is a great partner in this effort to keep highly skilled, highly technical jobs right here in San Antonio. The city is an attractive location for investment and growth, thanks in part to AT&T’s commitment here,” said Julián Castro, San Antonio mayor. "We work hard every day to encourage high-tech investment in San Antonio."

"The City of San Antonio has worked hard to determine AT&T's needs and to address them with our strategic partnerships. Economic development is as much about retention and expansion of existing businesses as it is attraction of new ones,” said Sheryl Sculley, San Antonio City Manager. “We commend AT&T's commitment to maintaining and creating jobs in our community and we see it as our responsibility to facilitate and create the environment to make that possible."
