At their regular September board meeting, the Alamo Colleges Board of Trustees approved the appointment of Dr. Roberto Aguero as Vice Chancellor for Academic Success and Jim Eskin as Executive Director of Institutional Advancement and the ACCD Foundation, Inc. Aguero and Eskin replace Dr. Kristine Clark and Roland DuBay, respectively, both of whom retired earlier this year.

“The hiring of these two outstanding individuals brings a wealth of experience and expertise to two positions that are critical to achieving our goal of becoming the best community college district in the nation,” said Alamo Colleges Chancellor Dr. Bruce H. Leslie. “The fact that we can attract individuals of their caliber speaks highly of the Alamo Colleges’ reputation for excellence,” he added.

Aguero brings to the Alamo Colleges a winning combination of a strong academic background, 27 years of senior-level educational leadership and a track record of civic involvement and achievement at the local, state and national level. Before coming to the Alamo Colleges, he served as vice chancellor, learning support services, for the Tarrant County College District. Previous to that position, he was vice president of academic affairs at Argosy University, president of Austin Community College, vice chancellor education affairs to the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) and president of Eastfield College in the DCCCD.

Aguero earned his Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from Pennsylvania State University and his master’s in education at Stephen F. Austin State University. He also received a certificate in higher education management from the Harvard University Institute of Educational Management. He was awarded a bachelor’s from Angelo State University after earning as associate degree at Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde.

Aguero has served as a commissioner for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the American Association of Community Colleges. He serves on the board of directors of the North Texas Community College Consortium and has served as its chairman. He also served on the board of directors for the College Board, the Association of Texas College and Universities and Dallas County WorkSource.

Eskin brings more than 30 years of leadership experience to institutional advancement programs, spanning fundraising, public affairs and communications work. His fundraising benchmarks include establishing records for gifts from individuals at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU).

From 2002 to 2009, as Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Our Lady of the Lake University, he directed annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, private grants, and alumni relations programs. In 2005, he obtained a historic $2.2 million gift from Dr. Janice Mendelson to fund and endow an International Folk Culture Center. He hosted more than 100 guest lectures at OLLU involving prominent corporate executives, entrepreneurs, non-profit heads and elected officials.

Before coming to OLLU, Eskin served as development officer and then director of advancement for the College of Business at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He raised several million dollars in private gifts from individual, corporate and foundation sources, including $1 million from Hong Kong businessman Richard Liu, the first million-dollar cash gift from an individual in UTSA history.

Eskin holds a bachelor’s degree in urban affairs from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He has authored more than 100 guest columns addressing a variety of social, business and historical topics that have appeared in daily newspapers and business journals across the country. He also publishes Stratagems, a monthly newsletter exploring trends and timely issues in the worlds of philanthropy, advocacy and image.
