RAMOS, MCCLENDON, ZARATE SWORN IN AS ALAMO COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT TRUSTEES
At the regular meeting of the Alamo Community College District (ACCD) Board of Trustees July 15, three newly elected trustees were sworn in. They are Jennifer Ramos, who won the May election in District 3, and District 2 Trustee Denver McClendon and District 5 Trustee Roberto Zarate, who were unopposed in the May election. Ramos and McClendon will serve on the ACCD Board until May of 2010, while Zarate will serve on the Board until May 2006.
Ramos was born and raised on the southside of San Antonio, lives and works in the South Presa community and is a parishioner of St. Cecilia Church. Ramos began her education at St. Cecilia School and earned her high school diploma at Incarnate Word High School. She attended San Antonio College for two years and then transferred to the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), where she earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration. During her time as an undergraduate at UIW, she volunteered with the Campus Ministry and participated in various community efforts. She was also involved with other non-profit organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, the Caesar Chavez Organization and Casa Amparo in Reynosa, Mexico. She is currently enrolled in the master’s degree program at UIW, where she expects to receive her degree in the fall of 2004.
Ramos and her family have been active members of the southside business community for more than 27 years. She and her mother, Ida Ramos, are co-owners of El Torero Mexican Restaurant at 3407 S. Presa Street. To show her appreciation to her community for providing her with the opportunity to achieve a good education, Ramos has coordinated and sponsored events to give back to the community, including an annual Thanksgiving lunch and “Santa is Coming” events. Ramos also volunteers with local organizations such as Presa Real, Presa Community Center and St. Cecilia’s Church.
McClendon was named to the District 2 seat by the ACCD Board in July 2003. A retired civil service employee, he is the owner of McClendon Properties, a company which acquires and manages residential real estate. He is also the operations manager for the Community Crime Prevention Network, Inc., which conducts training seminars in the areas of organizational skills, security and crime prevention for public housing executives. He is the vice chairman of Alamo Workforce Development, Inc. and chairs the organization’s external relations committee.
Zarate was appointed by the ACCD Board to the District 5 seat in August 2003. He is currently the principal at Mary Hull Elementary School in the Northside School District (NISD), a position he has held for 14 years. Under Zarate’s guidance, Hull Elementary has been honored as a Texas Recognized School, a Commended Title I School, a Texas Blue Ribbon School and a National Blue Ribbon School. It also received the Hispanic Magazine Exemplary School Award in 1999.
