ALAMO COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT BOARD OF TRUSTEES NOMINATES NEW CHANCELLOR

Members of the Alamo Community College District's (ACCD) Board of Trustees unanimously nominated Dr. J. Terence Kelly as ACCD's new chancellor during their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 17. The nomination must be approved by a formal vote of ACCD's trustees following a 21-day state-mandated waiting period.

State law requires a 21-day waiting period before a formal vote to approve the nomination can be made; the board will take a public vote on Kelly's nomination during its Tuesday, July 15, 2002 regular monthly meeting.

Kelly will fill the position currently occupied by Interim Chancellor Dr. J. Parker Chesson, Jr. Kelly has served as chancellor of Delgado Community College in New Orleans since January 5, 1998. Founded in 1921, Delgado is the oldest and largest community college in Louisiana. It enrolls more than 13,000 students in 70 associate degree and certificate programs. The college offers classes at four major campuses and community outreach sites throughout the metropolitan area.

"Dr. Kelly's nomination is the culmination of an outstanding selection effort led by Ms. Luz Maria Prieto," said ACCD Board of Trustees Chair Dr. Gene Sprague. "Dr. Kelly is a nationally recognized leader in community college education. His accomplishments at Delgado have been lauded by the New Orleans community as well as community college leaders across the nation. His ability and integrity also have been attested to by the leaders of the best community colleges in the country. He knows what is needed to establish ACCD as a top-ranked institution nationally," Sprague added. Sprague also said that the board anticipates that Dr. Kelly will begin his duties at ACCD by September 1, 2003.

"What impressed me most was his passion for the true mission of community colleges throughout his career," said ACCD Trustee and Chancellor Search Committee Chair Luz Maria Prieto. "He has been dedicated to the community college mission of offering educational opportunities for everyone, extending first, second and third chances to those seeking to better themselves and their lives through education. Dr. Kelly is committed to community outreach centers to serve the neediest in the community and to developmental education," Prieto added.

ACCD's nominee for chancellor also has served as interim chancellor of Nunez Community College in Chalmette, Louisiana from March through September 1999, a position he held concurrently with the Delgado chancellorship. Before coming to Delgado, Kelly held a number of senior positions at Miami-Dade Community College in Miami, Florida. He served for 11 years as president of the North Campus, and also served as vice president for administration, vice president for academic affairs, vice president for student affairs and assistant to the president.

Kelly is a native of Kingston, New York. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Miami and holds a doctoral degree in higher education administration from the University of Tennessee. He is the author of numerous publications, including books, chapters and articles relating to higher education, with a particular emphasis on technology.

While serving as chancellor at Delgado, Kelly has been active in a number of community organizations, including the New Orleans Regional Chamber of Commerce, the New Orleans Technology Council, the World Trade Center, Kingsley House, the Greater New Orleans Education Foundation, the New Orleans Educational Telecommunications Consortium and a number of workforce efforts.
