ALAMO WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT GRANT FUNDS TRAINING OF NURSE AIDES AT ST. PHILIP'S COLLEGE

Thirty St. Philip's College nursing students have received their certificates of completion in Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) training thanks in large part to a $55,000 grant awarded to the community college by the Alamo Workforce Development (AWD) Board, Inc., earlier this year. The training grant, part of an AWD demonstration project to place individuals in jobs as nurse aides, enabled the training of 30 local Texas Workforce Center customers for jobs in the nursing field.

St. Philip's College recognized the 30 students upon their completion of the program during a graduation ceremony held June 28. The graduates now have the option of entering the workforce or continuing their education with the pursuit of License Vocational Nursing (LVN) or Registered Nurse (RN) certification. Three of the students already have enrolled in St. Philip's College LVN and RN programs subsequent to attending these classes.

The students trained for six weeks in an enhanced nurse aide training program that included CNA skills, clinical care, CPR, food service manager certification, job readiness, and Spanish for nursing. The Incarnate Word Retirement Center in San Antonio and the Frank M. Tejeda, Jr., Veterans Home in Floresville each served as clinical training locations for the program.

St. Philip's College, one of the Alamo Community Colleges serving the greater Bexar County region, is a comprehensive community college designated as both a Historically Black College and a Hispanic Serving Institution. St. Philip's College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
