ACCD Board Names McClendon to District 2 Trustee Post


At a special board meeting on Monday, July 14, 2003, the Alamo Community College District (ACCD) Board of Trustees appointed Denver McClendon to fill the vacant District 2 position on the board. McClendon was selected from a field of four candidates who were interviewed by the board. He will serve until May 2004, when an election will be held to select a District 2 trustee for a new six-year term.

"The Board feels very fortunate and pleased that we had four outstanding candidates wanting to represent District 2," said ACCD Board Chair Dr. Gene Sprague. "We are also pleased that Mr. McClendon has agreed to serve and will be installed tonight before the board meeting. Mr. McClendon has a record of outstanding integrity and accomplishments in the military and private sector and will bring a wealth of experience in workforce development that will strengthen the board and our colleges."

McClendon is the owner of McClendon Properties, a company which acquires and manages residential real estate. He is also the operations manager for the Community Crime Prevention Network, Inc., which conducts training seminars in the areas of organizational skills, security and crime prevention for public housing executives. He is the vice chairman of Alamo Workforce Development, Inc. and chairs the organization's external relations committee.

McClendon is a retired civil service employee who served as the transition assistance program manager at Kelly AFB. He retired with the rank of Lt. Col. after 26 years of active duty and reserve military service with the U.S. Air Force. He is vice president of the San Antonio chapter of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. and chairman of the steward board at Porter Memorial C.M.E. Church. He is a past president of the Alamo City Lions Club, past vice president of the United Homeowners Improvement Association and a past member of the Governor's Task Force on Economic Transition and the mayor's BRAC Task Force.

McClendon holds a masters in business administration from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri and a bachelor's in business administration from Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee. He also pursued graduate studies at the University of Northern Colorado and the University of Montana.

A native of Atlanta, McClendon marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to oppose segregation. In the late 1980's, he conducted a voter registration drive on the eastside of San Antonio which resulted in 5,000 newly registered voters. McClendon and his wife, State Representative Ruth Jones McClendon, have four adult children.
