Online Publication Praises SAC Online
San Antonio College is featured in the July 2004 issue of Converge Online, an online publication that chronicles education technology policy, news, and trends for private industry and public education leaders. The monthly magazine praises SAC Online, the college's newest online addition, which provides enhanced electronic services to its students.
"San Antonio College - which offered its first Internet course in 1996 - recently launched San Antonio College Online (SAC Online)," the online magazine reported to its more than 44,000 readers. "SAC Online is totally enhanced: providing students easy access to online student services, 187+ courses, online degrees, and an online Internet Skills Center."
San Antonio College launched the online student service last April in response to the growing popularity of its distance education programs, which includes such alternatives to traditional classroom instruction as Internet courses, video courses, and videoconferencing.
"SAC Online is an enhancement of student instruction and a variety of services that are delivered on the Internet and packaged into one convenient web site," said Dr. Robert E. Zeigler, President. "This integration of electronic instruction and student support is an important step in expanding access to higher education to more people, regardless of their location."
The SAC Online Web site address is http://www.accd.edu/sac/online/.
The college's growing student interest in Internet offerings really made creating a Web site that provided enhanced electronic services a top priority, said Helen Torres, Director of Distance Education.
Since 1996, when the college's first Internet course drew nine students, thousands of students have gone on to complete San Antonio College coursework online. Last spring, more than 4,900 students enrolled in at least one of the college's Internet offerings, which now number 187+, and of these students, about 500 lived out of state and 69 out of the country.
Indeed, based on present trends, the college's Internet presence will continue to expand, crossing more state and country boundaries, Torres added.
