President Guzman Attends Harvard University Business School
Dr. Ana M. "Cha" Guzman, president of Palo Alto College, participated in Harvard University’s Business School’s
Hispanic Association for Corporate Responsibility: Board Leadership Program from Aug. 3 to 6.
Only two percent of the top Fortune 100 companies in the United States are Hispanic. These companies understand the need
to increase their number of Hispanic leaders as the number of their Hispanic customers increase in the United States.
The Hispanic Association for Corporate Responsibility: Board Leadership Program is part of the Harvard Business School.
The Harvard Business School develops standard-setting, customized learning experiences that create competitive advantages
for leading global corporations. Harvard partners with organizations that empower leaders to successfully manage change
to achieve important strategic objectives. The Hispanic Association for Corporate Responsibility explores cutting edge
"Best Practices" for board leadership training and preparedness.
Professor of Human Relations at Harvard Business School, Jay W. Lorsch, led sessions at the Harvard Board Leadership
Program. Harvard’s Best Practices include: periodic review of the key relationship between chief executive officers
(CEO) and boards; CEO evaluation, rewards and tenure; top management succession; strategy approval and assessment; as
well as assuring financial and accounting transparency.
Harvard program participants examine the roles of CEOs and boards using the Case Study Method. Harvard approaches their
methodology with a set of community standards including: respect for the rights, differences, and dignity of others;
honesty and integrity in dealing with all members of the community; and accountability for personal behavior.
"I have served on numerous boards of non-profit organizations. At Austin Community College, I worked directly with
the board. These experiences have contributed to my ability to preside over Palo Alto College. And now, Harvard provided
me an opportunity to dialogue with top business leadership scholars in this country about strategies for success as a
college president," said Guzman.
"I have come away from this experience with a renewed perspective on corporate governance, leadership and values
which will facilitate me along with my PAC colleagues to shape a better future for Palo Alto College," said Guzman.
