Zeigler Honored in Ford Salute to Education
San Antonio College President Robert E. Zeigler was one of five people selected by a committee of San Antonio leaders
to receive the 11th Annual Ford Salute to Education Award for their outstanding contributions to the community through
education.
The award was presented at a banquet Tuesday, August 26, 7 p.m. at the Marriott Rivercenter Hotel. The guest speaker was
Edsel Ford II, the great, great grandson of Henry Ford. State Representative Mike Villarreal introduced Dr. Zeigler, who
won in the Education category, and helped present his award. A short video on Zeigler featured testimonials by Dr. Nancy
Saunders, Sociology Chair, and Charles Lutz, President of BankOne.
The other awardees and their categories are Stephanie Sant' Ambrogio (The Arts), Concertmaster, San Antonio Symphony; Sr.
Celia Ramirez (Lifetime Achievement), St. John Bosco; Balous Miller (Business), Co-Owner, Bill Miller Bar-BQ; and Dr.
Roberto Trevino (Community Service), Executive Director, The Social Health & Research Center.
All proceeds from the banquet benefited the Ford Salute to Education program, which provides scholarships and grants.
This year the program will award 2,000 scholarships worth more than $1 million to students in Texas, California and
Florida.
Some previous honorees include Dr. Joe Bernal, Hon. Dolph Briscoe, Jr., Vikki Carr, Hon. Henry Cisneros, Archbishop
Patrick Flores, Dr. John Howe, Dr. Amy Freeman Lee, Pete Martinez, Sonny Melendrez, Naomi Shihab Nye, David Robinson,
Sr. Elizabeth Anne Sueltenfuss, and Dr. Jesse Zapata.
The program is funded by Ford Motor Company and the San Antonio area Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealers, who created the
Ford Salute to Education program in San Antonio in 1992.
