ST. PHILIP’S COLLEGE FALL THEATRE SEASON ANNOUNCED
The St. Philip’s College Theatre Program will kick off its 2004 fall theatre season with performances of an original play by faculty member Vincent Hardy, Angel Blood: the Nat Turner Rebellion, Sept. 17, 18, 24 and 25 in the Watson Fine Arts Center Theatre on the local community college’s main campus (1801 Martin Luther King Drive). In addition, the College will present the Shakespearian classic Hamlet, as adapted for local production by faculty member Charles Jeffries, Oct. 29-31 and Nov. 12-13.
Admission to these St. Philip’s College productions is $10 for the general public or $5 for Alamo Community College District students, faculty and staff, senior citizens and San Antonio Theatre Coalition (SATCO)) members. Reservations for both shows may be made by calling 210.531.3323.
Angel Blood depicts the story of Nat Turner’s rebellion in a narrative style detailing the motives of this complex character in executing a violent revolt in 1830’s Virginia. Performances are scheduled at 8 p.m. Sept. 17, 18, 24 and 25. Historian James Fitzgerald will moderate a discussion of the controversial figure Nat Turner immediately following the Sept. 18 performance.
Hamlet, arguably the most famous play in the world, is so widely-known that centuries removed from its original writing, the tragedy’s lead character remains an icon in the collective conscious of modern culture. Performances of Hamlet are scheduled at 8 p.m. Oct. 29 and 30 and Nov. 12 and13, and at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 31. The St. Philip’s adaptation of Hamlet also will be performed as the college’s entry in the American College Theatre Festival in Houston Nov. 2-6.
St. Philip’s College, one of the Alamo Community Colleges serving the greater Bexar County region, is a comprehensive community college designated as both a Historically Black College and a Hispanic Serving Institution. St. Philip’s College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
