NVC Advanced Water Treatment Program Will Train Students for Jobs in High Demand
Northwest Vista College is launching a ground-breaking Advanced Water Treatment program in Spring 2004. This is the
first such program in the state of Texas and one of a few in the nation.
"San Antonio and Texas need water and trained water experts. We are excited to bring this innovative program to our
college. It will have a positive impact on San Antonio and the surrounding area," said Jo-Carol Fabianke, vice-president
for Northwest Vista College.
The two-year program will lead to an Associate of Applied Science degree in Advanced Water Treatment. Students will
receive training on conventional technologies, reverse osmosis, ion exchange, and other advanced water treatment
technologies. They will benefit from intensive classroom and hands-on instruction and practice. Nationwide, graduates
earn an average starting salary of almost $40,000. Locally, salaries start at $31,000, according to the Texas Workforce
Commission.
The program covers all water treatment technologies that many area companies use as part of their everyday production.
Several local companies including Alamo Water, Austin Energy, Advanced Micro Devices, and Hays Energy, are supporting the
program by having its representatives serve on the Advisory Committee for this program at Northwest Vista College.
Committee member Dean Williams, branch manager with Bob Johnson & Associates in San Antonio, said "This program will bring
a higher level of educated individuals into the workforce. Every major industry here has a physical plant with some form
of water treatment which provides excellent employment opportunities for program graduates."
Northwest Vista is bringing the program to San Antonio in partnership with David H. Paul, Inc. (DHP), the world’s leader
in industrial water treatment training and technical services based in Farmington, NM. So far, more than 200 trained
professionals have graduated from DHP programs and their partnerships with colleges throughout the nation.
Individuals interested in the Advanced Water Treatment program may attend one of two Open Houses to be held on Tuesday,
October 14, at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 18 at 10:00 a.m. Both events will be held at the Commons area at Northwest
Vista College. For more information call (210) 348-2020.
