SAC Walthall Grant Will Benefit Music Students

San Antonio College and Texas Bach Choir officials announced a $10,000 grant to the Texas Bach Choir from the Marjorie T. Walthall Perpetual Charitable Trust Board that will provide a variety of benefits for music students in the coming year.

Dr. Jessica Howard, San Antonio College Music and Humanities Chairperson, and Dr. Daniel Long, Director of the Texas Bach Choir, made the announcement at a reception in the McAllister Auditorium 2nd floor foyer.

"We are very pleased to be a part of this grant, which will result in performances, master classes, fellowships, and a variety of experiences with the Texas Bach Choir for both music and non-music majors at the college," said Howard.

Four students were presented fellowships to perform with the Texas Bach Choir in March 2004: Roland Barrera, Melanie Powell, Claire Weber, and another student to be announced.

The announcement included the following schedule of events for the year: Fall Semester: Special lectures on early music for non-music majors in Music Appreciation classes; Master classes and demonstrations on period instruments; Texas Bach Choir rehearsals on Nov. 21-22 open to all students; and a Nov. 22, 7:30 p.m. performance of the Texas Bach Choir at McAllister Auditorium free to all students.

Spring Semester: Combined Texas Bach Choir and SAC Chamber Choir performances March 6 and 7; SAC vocalists to perform as soloists with Texas Bach Choir; the Chamber Choir to perform music from Alexander's Feast with period instruments; and combined choirs to perform Deutsche Magnificat, 1671, for double chorus by Heinrich Schutz.

The SAC Music and Humanities Department celebrated its 50th Anniversary a year ago. Its first chairperson was the late Dr. Marjorie T. Walthall. The charitable trust was established by her aunt of the same name, Marjorie T. Walthall. This grant was given in memory of her niece, Dr. Walthall, by the charitable trust.

Founded in 1976, the Texas Bach Choir has been under the direction of Dr. Daniel Long since 1993. Under his direction, the choir has committed to perform recently discovered music of Mexican Baroque composers, in addition to early music through the Baroque period as well as music of all eras.
