SAC INVITES COMMUNITY TO HISPANIC/LATINO TESTING DAY ON OCTOBER 4
With the theme of "Don't Abbreviate Your Life," San Antonio College and leading community health care providers will commemorate National Hispanic/Latino Testing Day by inviting the community to a free Healthy Sexuality Fair on Monday, Oct. 4, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. The event will be held in the patio area between the Loftin Student Center and the Moody Learning Center.Health agency representatives and organizations will provide free sexual health counseling, on-site testing for HIV, and information about health awareness and prevention for HIV/AIDS, STDs, and unintended pregnancy.
Organizations and groups will include the Community Clinic-Project Save, San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, Beat AIDS, Planned Parenthood of San Antonio and South Central Texas, Rape Crisis Center, San Antonio College Peer Educators and Human Sexuality psychology class.
"We want to raise awareness about sexual health and more specifically HIV and STDs," said Kelly Welsh, Director of Education for Planned Parenthood. "Even in this modern era, these topics are still in the closet. San Antonio surpasses the national average for STD and teen pregnancy rates and has high HIV/AIDS rates for the age group of 15-24," she added.
A Bridges to Healthy Communities grant from the American Association of Community Colleges funds the Health Sexuality Fair and other San Antonio College activities that address HIV/AIDS, STD, and teen pregnancy rates in San Antonio.
"Through the San Antonio College activities, such as the Sexual Health Fair on Oct. 4, we hope to provide awareness and prevention information to this age group," said Dr. Pamela Hill, Project Director of the Bridges grant.
