NORTHWEST VISTA COLLEGE AND UIW AWARDED $3 MILLION FEDERAL GRANT

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (October 12, 2004)—The Department of Education recently announced that Northwest Vista College and the University of the Incarnate Word have been awarded a $3 million Title V cooperative grant. Title V grants are awarded to Hispanic-serving institutions to assist those institutions of higher education to expand their capacity to serve Hispanic and low-income students.

Over the course of this five-year grant, Northwest Vista College will work toward the following outcomes:

(1) Increase the number of first-year students who declare a major before the end of their second semester by expanding student orientations, creating a dynamic first-year experience, and incorporating career planning strategies for students who are undecided on a major.

(2) Increase the number of students who discover and participate in campus-based activities. NVC plans to create a student-run electronic newspaper and expand the campus news center so that students are better informed of all campus activities.

(3) Increase the number of faculty involved in programs designed to promote retention of first-year students. Web pages will be developed for instructors to share ideas and resources as well as access information on the use of cooperative learning and critical thinking strategies. Furthermore, the grant will help fund visiting scholars who will share their expertise with faculty.

“This grant will be a real boost in our continuing efforts to improve student retention and success rates,” says Northwest Vista College President Jacqueline Claunch.

Northwest Vista College, which opened in 1995, is part of the Alamo Community College District. Located at 3535 N. Ellison Drive, next to Sea World of Texas, Northwest Vista College’s expanding agreements with business and higher education partnerships provide a wealth of opportunities for students and the community.
