Northwest Vista College Observes Disabilities Awareness Month

On Saturday, October 11, Northwest Vista College students and staff members, in partnership with the non-profit agency Repair And Modification program (RAMP), celebrated Disabilities Awareness Month by building a wheelchair ramp at the home of Mary Shannon, an elderly disabled woman.

According to Ruth Polston, the volunteer/job site coordinator for RAMP, "The volunteer crew was fantastic. This was the first time we had met each other, but (there was) synchronicity. We worked well together. Even though it rained, it was completed in only four hours." Prior to the project, Ms. Shannon's home had a ramp her late son had built that had begun to deteriorate. Ms. Shannon says that this new ramp will now give her more freedom to leave her home. "My son did a lot of work helping other people during his lifetime," she says. "The lord has now helped me at my time of need."
