ST. PHILIP'S COLLEGE, VAN DE WALLE FARMS TO HOST STATEWIDE CULINARY COMPETITION OCT. 19



St. Philip's College will host the Texas Culinary Competition Invitational sponsored by Van De Walle Farms Salsa this Saturday, Oct. 19. Two culinary teams from the Art Institute of Houston, two from El Centro College of Dallas and four from host school St. Philip's College will compete for cash scholarships and medals.

The competition will focus on international cuisine, requiring each team to utilize Van De Walle Farms salsa and products in the preparation of a salad, entrie and side dish. Food preparation will begin at 8 a.m., with plate presentation and judging to take place at 11:30 a.m. in the St. Philip's College Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Arts kitchens located in the school's Campus Center.

Event sponsor Van De Walle Farms will provide food staples for the competition. Prizes will include scholarships and medals for first, second, and third place winners. The first place team will divide $1500 ($750 each), second place $1000 ($500 each), and third place $500 ($250 each). Certificates of participation will be awarded to all participants. All entries will be judge on criteria of taste, cost-effectiveness, originality, creativity, presentation and overall appearance.

St. Philip's College offers the only college culinary school in the San Antonio area. The program is accredited by the American Culinary Federation Educational Institute Accrediting Commission and has been rated an exemplary program by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

St. Philip's is a college of the Alamo Community College District, and is the nations only college designated both a Historically Black College and a Hispanic Serving Institution. St. Philip's College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
