The San Antonio College Phi Theta Kappa student honors society will hold an Xtreme Popular Culture Fair on Saturday, Nov. 20, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. on campus near the Candler Physical Education Center, Planetarium, and in the adjacent parking lots (Lots 20 and 21). The event is free and open to the public and will feature entertainment, food, music, demonstrations, and information about popular culture, student financial aid, and health issues.
"Our goal is to introduce alternative youth's pop culture to the community," said Lisa Chapman, President of Phi Theta Kappa, Beta Nu Chapter. She added, "This culture normally has a negative connotation. We are trying to put a positive spin on it and show today's youth that they can maintain their individuality through the expression of pop culture and continue their education."
The Xtreme Popular Culture Fair will include rap and hip-hop musicians (including the group "Paint by Numbers"), a performance by the San Antonio College American Sign Language Choir, a Comedy Club performance, and entertainers such as break dancers and belly dancers. There will be demonstrations by Brazilian martial artists, graffiti art, and skateboard and BMX bike exhibitions by VClub Clothing, BMX Demo, and Rex Ramps.
An open mike will be available for a reading poetry, prose and short stories. Some of the booth vendors will include L&M Bookstore, Stained Elegance, Pittos, and Askew Design Studio.Sponsors include KISS 99.5, KSYM 90.1, Magic 105.3, HotSpotsofSanAntonio.com, VClub Clothing, BMX Team, and Rex Ramps.
