ST. PHILIP’S COLLEGE STUDENTS HOLD BOOK DRIVE FOR SAN ANTONIO YOUTH
A group of St. Philip’s College English students is teaming up with Money Mart Pawn & Jewelry and the San Antonio Youth Literacy Program to collect books for the children of San Antonio. Students in the college’s English 1301 Service Learning class are collecting gently used books for the Youth Literacy Program at collection points on the main campus (1801 Martin Luther King Drive) and Northeast Campus (7980 Pat Booker Road) of St. Philip’s College as well as the following Money Mart Pawn & Jewelry locations: 1621 Culebra, 2502 Harry Wurzbach and 5525 NW Loop 410, Nov. 2-19.
Books collected will go to the Youth Literacy Program, a non-profit program dedicated to serving local children who are struggling to read on grade level. Through this outreach initiative, students from area colleges volunteer to serve as reading mentors and tutors at local designated elementary schools in an effort to improve the reading proficiency of young children.
Money Mart Pawn & Jewelry, a partner in the book drive, is offering a one-time $5 discount toward the purchase of any item in their store with a minimum donation of five books. The group would prefer donations of books for young adults and children as well as coloring and Spanish books. More information is available by calling the St. Philip’s College Office of Student Life/Service Learning Program at 531.3240.
The Service-Learning Program at St. Philip’s College is in its sixth year. Through this college initiative, each semester several hundred students serve the community while gaining a better understanding of their course material. This service includes volunteering at local schools, non-profit agencies, and governmental organizations. Beyond the service to the community and the emphasis on learning, the Service Learning Program also highlights the need for students to be civically engaged.
St. Philip’s College, one of the Alamo Community Colleges serving the greater Bexar County region, is a comprehensive community college designated as both an Historically Black College and an Hispanic Serving Institution. St. Philip’s College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
