ST. PHILIP'S COLLEGE TO INTRODUCE NEW AVIONICS PROGRAM BEGINNING IN JANUARY

St. Philip's College will introduce a new curriculum in Avionics this January that will prepare students to test for the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) Radiotelephone Operator's License upon completion of the program. The new Avionics Program will be offered for the first time at the start of St. Philip's College Southwest Campus spring 2003 semester, which begins Jan. 6. More information on the new St. Philip's College Avionics Program is available by contacting Rafael Brisita or Rod Cotter at (210) 921-4635 or 4894.

The Avionics program, offered through St. Philip's College Southwest Campus, complements one of the region's preeminent aviation technology training curricula that already includes FAA certified courses in airframe and powerplant mechanics. The new 36-hour avionics program can be completed in as little as two semesters, and is designed to fill the gap in the ever-changing world of modern aircraft electronics systems featuring advanced aerospace communication and navigation technologies.

The program will offer morning, afternoon and evening classes. In addition to classroom instruction at St. Philip's College Southwest Campus, the program will feature hands-on training in specially designed labs at the Alamo Community College District's Advance Technology Center located at KellyUSA.

Courses will cover subject areas such as Aviation Science, Basic Electricity, Airframe Electrical Systems, Aircraft Electrical and Electronic Systems Installation, Theory and Operational Testing of Aircraft Electrical Systems, Cockpit Orientation and Electrical Systems Instrument and Navigation/Communication. Upon completion of the program, graduates will have the technical skills needed for maintaining complex avionics systems, including the ability to use sophisticated equipment to test autopilot, radios, GPS, instrument landing systems, auto land, auto takeoff, and other automated aircraft components.

St. Philip's College, one of the Alamo Community Colleges serving the greater Bexar County region, is a comprehensive community college designated as both a Historically Black College and a Hispanic Serving Institution. St. Philip's College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
