SAC Presents Activities in Observance of International Education Week


San Antonio College will present a line-up of activities in observance of International Education Week, Nov. 18-22.

Activities will include an International Student Fair on Monday. A variety of lectures also will be presented such as "The Debate on Iraq: Diverse Perspective" at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, and "San Antonio & the World in the 21st Century" at 9 a.m. on Thursday.

International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.

Monday, Nov. 18
"International Students' Fair"
10 a.m.-1 p.m., LSC.
This event will feature students from various countries displaying crafts, foods, pictures, native clothing, and singing and dancing from their countries.

"Taking Your Show on the Road: Teaching in a Foreign Country" 11 a.m., MLC 652. Les Bleamaster (Kinesiology/Physical Education) and Tom Davis (ESL). Bleamaster will talk about his experience in Bahrain teaching, training, and coaching modern pentathlon, and recruiting in small towns to find potential athletes. Davis will talk about teaching at King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for one year; teaching in Korea for a university/corporate sponsorship for Sogang University/Samsung at a Samsung retreat outside Seoul; and at Kangweon University.

Discussion of Abraham: A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths, by Bruce Feiler, led by Rev. Jim Miller of the Methodist Student Center.

"Study & Travel Abroad: An Interdepartmental and Interdisciplinary Approach"

Presented by Sammye Smith (Kinesiology/Physical Education), John Fardal (Biology), and Guillermo Campos (Foreign Languages).

Tuesday, Nov. 19
"Model OAS"
2 p.m., MLC 652.
Dr. Phil Rogers (Political Science) and this year's Model Organization of American States team will offer a symposium on the upcoming competition and how others can get involved to compete against 17 universities.

"From the Big Picture to the Classroom: Examples of Successful Activities Used to Internationalize the Curriculum"
3:30 p.m., MLC 600.
Sylvia DeLeon (Public Administration), Marshall Lloyd (Criminal Justice), Roger Stanley (Astronomy), Mary Allen Martin (Mortuary Science), and Joan Fabian (Visual Arts & Technology)
Panel of instructors who have infused their courses with international content. They will present successful examples that worked with their students.

Wednesday, Nov. 20
"Bringing Back the Positive: An Artist and Educator in Pakistan"

Presented by Joan Fabian (Visual Arts & Technology), former Fulbright Scholar in Pakistan.

"The Debate on Iraq: Diverse Perspectives"

Panel presentation to include: Dr. Carol Bargeron, History Dept., Southwest Texas State University, "The Contemporary Middle East: Old Problems and New Realities"; Dr. Phil Rogers, SAC Political Science, "The Debate in the U.N.
