Coordinating Board Approves SAC's Distance Ed Plan

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board recently approved San Antonio College's plan for distance education and off-campus instruction. This approval means the college plan meets state rules and regulations for procedures, standards, and quality of instruction.

Examples of these rules and regulations include approval by the accrediting organization Southern Association of Colleges and Schools for delivery of the A.A. and A.A.S. degrees at a distance (including via Internet), an evaluation plan in place for programs and technology, maintaining faculty qualifications equal to that of classroom instructors, provision of appropriate student services, and maintaining appropriate distance education facilities and equipment at both on-campus and off-campus sites.

San Antonio College offered the first Internet course in San Antonio and also the first associates degree program via Internet in Texas. Currently, more than 3,000 students are enrolled in Internet classes, in addition to about 1,225 in telecourses, 1,000 at off-campus sites, and 1,700 in dual-credit classes.
