SAC STUDENT NEWSPAPER THE RANGER SELECTED AMONG TOP COLLEGE PUBLICATIONS IN THE NATION

For the 10th time in its history, The Ranger student newspaper of San Antonio College has won the Pacemaker Award, given to the top two- and four-year college newspapers in the nation by the Associated Collegiate Press and the Newspaper Association of America Foundation. The award was presented at the National College Media Convention in Nashville Nov. 5-7.

Ricky Espinoza and Raymond Jordan were the editors of the winning issues, and the advisors are Irene Abrego, Tricia Buchhorn, and Marianne Odom.

The judges select Pacemakers based on "coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership on the opinion page, evidence of in-depth reporting, design, photography, art and graphics," states the Associated Collegiate Press website at http://www.studentpress.org/acp/winners/npm04.html, where winners and finalists are listed and viewers can see samples from the Winners Gallery link.

Twenty-five winners of the 2004 Pacemaker Award have been announced. These include publications from California State University, UCLA, Riverside Community College, Georgia Tech, Northwestern University, Harvard University, Case Western Reserve University, and New York University. The only other winning institutions from Texas are Southern Methodist University and North Lake College.

Students in the Journalism-Photography Program often win awards for their work on The Ranger and The Fourth Write magazine, and two former students have gone on to win the Pulitzer Prize for their work in photojournalism: Rudolfo Gonzales for his coverage of the Columbine High School tragedy for the Rocky Mountain News and Ron Cortez for his photo-essay on hospices for the Philadelphia Inquirer.
