ST. PHILIP'S COLLEGE WINTER GRADUATION SCHEDULED DEC. 12
88-year-old among those to receive associate degree

St. Philip's College will hold its 2002 winter graduation on Thursday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m., at Laurie Auditorium on the Trinity University campus. Dr. Adelina S. Silva, Alamo Community College District director for Student & Community Program Development, will deliver the evening's keynote address.

More than 200 St. Philip's College students are expected to participate in the graduation ceremonies, including 88-year-old Georgia Mitchell Taylor, who will receive an associate of arts degree 70 years since first enrolling in classes at the college. Taylor will join fellow graduates, many of them one-fourth her age, who will receive associate of arts and associate of science degrees or associate of applied science and technology degrees and certificates during the college's mid-year graduation ceremony.

Taylor first attended St. Philip's College in the 1930s, but stopped one class short of completing her degree requirements. She re-enrolled in 1970 and completed three hours of college math, but never applied for a degree.

St. Philip's College, one of the Alamo Community Colleges serving the greater Bexar County region, is a comprehensive community college designated as both a Historically Black College and a Hispanic Serving Institution. St. Philip's College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
