| San
Antonio College’s student of the month,
Teresa Lynn Flores, started college with a
mixture of fear and anticipation, and this
May leaves a proud graduate with her associate
of arts in teaching, excited about the next
step on her journey to become a teacher. She
was attracted to SAC because of the Teaching
Academy Program for future teachers, and while
here, she became involved in the TAPP (Teaching
Academy Program Peers) student organization.
Looking for a network of other future educators,
she learned more about the club and was elected
president in the 2005-2006 school year.
As
president of TAPP, Teresa has made lasting
friendships and connections to the college.
Under Teresa’s leadership, TAPP participated
in community service projects: spearheading
the Any Baby Can Christmas program, collecting
over 800 books in a book drive for the San
Antonio Children’s Shelter, and organizing
children’s activities at the San Antonio
College Book Fair. In addition, Teresa successfully
planned and carried out activities to build
up the TAPP scholarship fund created last
year. She feels being involved in a student
organization benefits students in many ways:
interaction with peers and faculty and staff;
scholarship and community service opportunities;
and personal fulfillment and development.
A
wife and mother of three children (Jessica,
Kaitlyn, and Jason), Teresa learned to effectively
manage time and financial resources involved
in gaining a college education, balancing
commitments to family, school, and TAPP. In
the San Antonio community she has done extensive
volunteer work with the Edgewood, Northside
and San Antonio school districts, and Girl
Scouts of America.
Teresa
will continue her education at the University
of Texas at San Antonio, where she will earn
a bachelor’s of arts in education, grades
4 through 8 with a specialization in math
and science. Teresa’s goal is to teach
pre-Algebra and Algebra at the middle school
level. Teresa represents so many of the ACCD
students who work hard and have overcome obstacles
to further their education and make a contribution
to our community. She is an exemplary student
the ACCD community can be proud of.
