Goal II. Student Success
In recognition of Black History Month, Northeast Lakeview College featured an event titled “A Brief History of Gospel Music in America” on February 27th. Facilitated by Dr. Dollie Hudspeth, chair of communications at Northeast Lakeview College, and featuring the St. Philip's Gospel Choir and its director, Henry Washington, the presentation included music franging rom earlier Negro spirituals which can be traced to Africa to contemporary gospel music.

The Northeast Lakeview College Psychology Club held its organizational meeting on February 22. Sixteen students, two full-time faculty and one adjunct faculty were in attendance. The focus of the club will be to look at specific areas within the discipline that are of interest to students, such as relationships, cognitive neuroscience and child and family therapy. The organization has planned several events for the semester, such as a program highlighting careers in psychology and a psychology-related service project. In April, ten club members will travel to Fort Worth for the annual convention of the Southwestern Psychological Association.

Goal III. Workforce Development
Three Northeast Lakeview College representatives attended the International Student Recruitment workshop last week. The workshop, hosted by St. Philip’s College, presented information on successful international programs at Houston Community College and Dallas County Community College District, while also providing an avenue for interactive brainstorming and group discussions among Alamo Community Colleges’ administrators and faculty regarding our own international student programs.

Goal V. Organizational Communications
The Thursday, February 22 edition of The Herald featured a full-page article on Northeast Lakeview College. The article discussed the progress of the new campus site, the upcoming groundbreaking ceremony, and more importantly – the beginning of construction to begin shortly thereafter.

 

 

Goal II. Student Success
On Saturday, February 24, Northwest Vista College hosted a 5K Run/Walk in recognition of National Sports and Fitness Day. The purpose of the event was to promote health and wellness and inspire more people to take an interest in walking for fitness. The 5K Run/Walk drew the participation of nearly 100 people from the college and community.

Goal IV. Capacity to Serve
Northwest Vista College will partner with the Texas Master Naturalists and volunteers from the Cibolo Nature Center in Boerne to rescue plants from designated construction sites at the college. The flowers, trees, and shrubs will be transplanted by these groups in an effort to save the plant life located in areas slated for construction. The first plant rescue will occur on Sunday, March 18 from 1- p.m.

Goal I. Access to Higher Education
PAC held its 8th Annual Dual Credit Counselors meeting on campus, which was attended by representatives of 30 high schools in the PAC service area. The goal of the meeting was to acquaint the counselors with the expansion of services now being provided to dual credit students, along with informing them of new policies, regulations and guidelines. Thousands of local high school students have begun their college education before graduating from high school by completing dual credit courses with Palo Alto College.

Goal III. Workforce Development
PAC’s program manager of industrial technology taped an episode of “Inside the ACCD” for broadcast on Channel 98, the Education Access Channel for the City of San Antonio. The 15-minute program focused on computer-based training, lectures and hands-on activities sought by local employers such as Toyota, Pioneer Flour Mills, SMI Steel Mill, and DPT Laboratories, Ltd.

Goal V. Organizational Communications
PAC hosted a presentation by Sonja L. Lanehart on “African American Language Identities: Contradictions and Conundrums” in celebration of Black History Month. Lanehart holds the Brackenridge Endowed Chair at the University of Texas at San Antonio, and is an authority on language and uses of literacy in the African American community.

 

Goal III. Workforce Development
USAA recruited on campus and received 42 applications for students interested in part-time employment. Another 100 students were provided information about employment opportunities at USAA and were given applications to complete and fax in. The USAA representative stated that SPC’s student response was better than at any of the other colleges and universities in the area.

Goal IV. Capacity to Serve
On 2/26/2007, Barbara L. Shawyer, United States Department of Education, Federal Real Property Assistance Program, conducted a site visit to review the United States Department of Education 2007– Annual Utilization Report. Conducted tour of Southwest Campus buildings 3004, 3008, and 3020. Provide briefing on facilities improvements in support of enrollment plan and stewardship of public funds and Title III grant funding.

Goal I. Access to Higher Education
This week San Antonio College hosted in McAllister Auditorium a special performance of the San Antonio Symphony, directed by Resident Conductor David In-Jae Cho, with choral accompaniment by the 51-member San Antonio College Concert Choir and the 53-member East Central High School Chorale. A capacity audience listened to the program entitled “Instruments of Peace,” in keeping with the Season for Nonviolence, an international 64-day grassroots campaign promoting nonviolence. The highlight of the evening was the performance of “Mass for Justice and Peace,” composed by Alice Gomez, award-winning San Antonio College music Instructor and a performer with the San Antonio Symphony.

Goal II. Student Success
Steve Daluz, a former Visual Arts & Technologies student at San Antonio College, painted the winning design for the official 2007 Fiesta poster. He said he wanted to create a “timeless image of two dancers who might have been seen a hundred years ago in San Antonio, or just yesterday.”

Goal IV. Capacity to Serve
After a six-month renovation of the observatory and telescope, the San Antonio College Observatory re-opened to the public last weekend by hosting with the San Antonio Astronomical Association “Saturn Night Live,” an evening observing session in the observatory and in the adjacent parking lot.

Goal V. Organizational Communications
The college was publicized by a remote broadcast on The Beat (KBBT, 99.5-FM radio) from the college campus to increase awareness of the college during this period of registration for the Spring Flex II session.
