Goal I. Access to Higher Education
The Department of Athletics and Natatorium Services tested the freshmen class of the police academy. 38 cadets were tested and 2 failed. Swim lessons will be given to the two cadets over the next 9 weeks to assist them with the final test.
Goal II. Student Success
SPC Director of Student Life John Martin and four members of the African American Men on the Move, participated in the Pfeifer Academy Career Day, and presented “G.O.Y.A. (Get Off of Your Ambition) Success Strategy” to encourage the 80 middle school students in attendance to make good grades and look forward to college.
PAC’s Learning Resource Center is offering “Matter Matters: Chemistry for Kids,” a free summer program for 3rd and 4th graders. The program will be offered in two separate three-week sessions. Participants will employ scientific methods to perform simple experiments, construct molecular models and learn about the use of chemistry in every day life.
The Ranger student newspaper at SAC won the following awards in recent competitions: 1) Best Non-Daily College Newspaper of the Year in Texas, in the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors competition at their annual convention in San Antonio. 2) First Place for “Recovering Lives,” a collection of stories reported in East Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi four months after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita — with students winning 10 individual awards in the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association competition against both two- and four year college publications. 3) Second Place for Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper published fewer than four times a week and Second Place in the Best Affiliated Web Site Category for http://www.theranger.org at the Region 8 convention of the Society of Professional Journalists recognizing excellence in journalism among colleges and universities in Texas and Oklahoma.
Dr. Jackie Claunch was recently selected to serve on the National Advisory Board for the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE). Dr. Claunch attended the Board’s annual meeting following the NISOD Conference.

III. Workforce Development
Dr. Federico Zaragoza and Mr. Mike Morphew met with Dr. Dan Troxell, Superintendent of Kerrville ISD to discuss the establishment of an ACC Early College and Workforce Education Campus for Fall 2007.
Dr. John Soto, Director Business Outreach met with Cyndy Hanson (Brooks City-base) and Barbara Ankamah (City of San Antonio) regarding International Economic Development Certification training to begin in October 2007 thru January 2008. They are budgeting $75,000 to train 50 individuals for this certification.
The Southwest Campus leadership met with the Vice President of Learning, Training and Development of Boeing Corporation and with Boeing’s training team to discuss the working model used in Boeing’s San Antonio plant. Emphasis was placed on best practices and current activities which promote cooperation between St. Philip's College and the local Boeing plant. The company seeking ways to implement the same model to allow collaboration with other community colleges throughout the nation.
Goal IV. Capacity To Serve
The foundation slab for the Palo Alto College Veterinary Tech Building was constructed. This is the first foundation slab for any of the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) projects.
Phase 1 of the migration to a new enterprise-wide email system was completed last weekend on schedule. There were 128,000 email accounts and mailboxes that were migrated to the new system. Phase 2-migration work is scheduled for this week. Also, ACCD went live with a new WWW server on May 21. All ACCD web sites were migrated to the new system which is integrated as part of the ACCD active directory computer network. The migration was completed on schedule. Over a year was put into the planning and deployment related to the migration.

V. Organizational Communication
FYI, the Chancellor’s new webpage is now live. Click on the following link to access the site: http://www.accd.edu/main/html/admin/chancellor/welcome.htm The page can also be accessed through the main ACCD webpage by clicking on Administration on the left-hand panel. We are pleased to add yet another mechanism for enhancing communication both internally and externally.
Dr. Thomas Baynum, Vice President for Academic Affairs at PAC, has been named President of Coastal Bend Community College. Our congratulations go out to Dr. Baynum who will undoubtedly do a tremendous job in his new position.
Earlier this week, a number of us attended the NISOD conference in Austin, where 35 ACCD faculty members were presented with Teaching Excellence Awards. The recipients will be invited to the June Board meeting for introduction to and recognition by the Trustees.
We have an increasing number of events and activities district-wide and are taking the opportunity to showcase such events on Time Warner Cable channel 98 and Grande cable channel 19. This section of the Chancellor’s Weekly Report will now provide a schedule of the programming for our regularly scheduled times of 12 – 2 pm on Saturday and 9 – 11 am on Sunday. Programming varies due to the timing of Board and committee meetings, groundbreaking ceremonies, etc. The programming for the coming weekend is as follows:
