Goal II. Student Success
The San Antonio chapter of the Association for Women in Communications (AWC) recently announced that two Northwest Vista College faculty members, Linda Cuellar and Craig Coroneos, are recipients of the Proliner Award for their collaboration on the thirty-minute documentary “Gaining Ground,” which aired on KLRN-TV in 2006. The award will be presented at the San Antonio chapter’s 27th Annual Headliner/Proliner Awards Banquet, which honors seven community leaders for their outstanding professional, volunteer and civic achievements and 80 pieces of work by professional communicators in the San Antonio area. “Gaining Ground,” produced by KLRN-TV in conjunction with Making Connections/San Antonio, captures the stories of several San Antonio West Side residents who have achieved their financial dreams. The program was created as a companion to the national PBS documentary, “Waging a Living,” which focused on raising awareness about the problems faced by low-income earners on a national level. The Proliner Awards recognize professional excellence in the field of communications.
Northwest Vista College and Palo Alto College dance students joined the San Antonio Dance Umbrella in a free performance celebrating the life of Dora Ruffner on Friday, June 1 at 7:00 PM at the Carver Community Cultural Center. Donations were accepted to fund the Dora Ruffner Dance Scholarship. Dora was a founding member of the San Antonio Dance Umbrella and the San Antonio Modern Dancers’ Co-Laboratory (MoDaCoLab), regional director of Turning the Wheel Productions, and lead dance instructor at Palo Alto College. Prior to arriving at Palo Alto, she spent ten years as the wellness coordinator at the University of Incarnate Word. At the Dance Umbrella, she co-developed the Dance Partners Program, a curriculum-based dance in schools program. In October 2006, she was awarded the Center Stage award for her vast contributions to the organization. Students of NVC and PAC’s Maymester dance class performed “D’s Spirit,” an original piece choreographed by Brazilian artist, dancer and instructor Rosangela Silvestre. Silvestre was in residence at both colleges during the Maymester.

Goal I. Access To Higher Education
Several PAC faculty members attended a Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) workshop entitled “Engaging Under-Prepared Students” in Austin, May 22. The workshop was held in conjunction with the International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence sponsored by the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD).
Goal II. Student Success
PAC’s Vice President of Academic Affairs lead a group of 13 ACCD students to Turkey to study its history, religions, arts and culture during Maymester 2007. The group viewed some of the most impressive archaeological parks in the world that evoked the greatness of Asia Minor during the height of the Roman Empire and visited cities such as Istanbul, Izmir and Troy.
Goal III. Workforce Development
PAC’s Corporate and Community Education (CCE) Department has launched an advertising blitz highlighting A+ Certification Training, Allied Health programs, and Office Education programs in all the city’s military newspapers, along with La Prensa and the Southside Reporter. Initial reports show an increase in phone calls to CCE requesting additional information on the programs and students registering for classes.
Goal V. Organizational Communication

Goal I. Access To Higher Education
Through the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) national survey, St. Philip’s College students gave us the highest national rating of 97.4% in recommending their institution (SPC) to other students. SPC also received, from the same CCSSE survey, a 90.7% ranking in overall student evaluation of the entire educational experience as good or excellent.
Goal II. Student Success
Six members of the St. Philip's College class of the Student Leadership Institute (SLI) concluded their year-long experience in the program with the “DC Experience.” This trip, conducted May 21-26 in Washington, DC, allowed the students to interact with leaders in the governmental and educational sectors. Exposure to the numerous rich historical and cultural opportunities was also an important focus of this student experience. The trip was coordinated through the District SLI Office.
On Tuesday, May 22, 2007, Danny Holmes, Abraham Robles and Channa Taylor (St. Philip's College students) served on two panels during the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Conference. Vince Tinto facilitated the first panel, Building Relationships for Student Success – Students Speak Out; the second panel, Making Connections with Entering Students, was facilitated by Arleen Arnsparger. The students offered valuable insight and shared remarkable stories of how numerous faculty and staff contributed to their success. Each of the students stated their appreciation and honor of being given the opportunity to participate in the conference.
Goal
IV. Capacity To Serve
In the interest of furthering campus security, Julius Gordon, our CIP and General Campus Construction Director, met with SPC/ACC Department of Public Safety representatives to determine placement of monitoring cameras on campus. This activity was planned before the Virginia Tech tragedy. Fifteen potential monitoring sites have been identified on the main campus. There are currently 32 such monitors at Southwest Campus with nine additional cameras planned at that location. Campus community members will be polled for their monitoring site suggestions.
The feasibility of offering First Aid/CPR training to Skanska workers has been explored. The training will be offered through our Continuing Education Department. The company is also interested in co-sponsoring a community Health Fair with the College. Plans for such an event will be developed with input from the Allied Health and Nursing Departments along with College Health Center staff.
SPC is continuing the development of collaborative proposals with the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and with Texas State University (TSU) for our students, advisors, and faculty to participate in programs to assist minority students and women to increase their capabilities and continue their education in computer science. The proposals are being submitted to the Broadening Participation in Computing Program of the National Science Foundation (NSF). The broad objective is to increase gender and ethnic diversity in computing.
Goal V. Organizational Communication
The SPC Web site began its rollout on May 21. The new site is designed to be visually appealing and create a consistent identity for the College and to be ADA compliant with the World Wide Web (W3C) Consortium’s highest level of conformance. The conversions from the old Web site to the new standards will continue throughout the remainder of the calendar year. The SPC Web Standards Manual was presented to the President’s Cabinet and received approval with only slight modifications.
