| Goal IV. Capacity to Serve
District Print Services, at the request of Northwest Vista College, is exploring the creation of a full service copy center at NVC. Print Services is providing technical support and information to a committee that is preparing a proposal to the College President for her approval. This project, once completed, will allow us to provide better service to our customers at NVC.
DPS officers issued 136 Crime Prevention Reminders district wide and responded to or generated 345 calls for service.
Bids have opened for several Preventive Maintenance Projects including the SAC McAllister Fine Arts Dimmer project, Nail Technical Center Second Floor Renovation, Houston Street and Sheridan Street Emergency Generators and NLC Pat Booker Road facility HVAC improvements.
The contractor has mobilized and begun site clearing and grading at Northwest Vista College. CIP construction is underway at all colleges.
The Human Resources Training Unit conducted sexual harassment prevention training attended by 12 employees. The Compensation Unit, Employment Unit, and the HR Director met with ACCD College Presidents, Dr. Drum and Dr. Leslie to discuss the position effectiveness program. The Records and Information Systems Unit finalized the vacancy report for the position evaluation initiative. The Employee Relations Unit participated in a meeting between ACCD Legal Counsel and outside attorneys in preparation for developing training guidelines for supervisory/management members of the ACCD.
Information Technologies hosted the 12th Annual Texas Connection Consortium conference on May 23-24, 2007 in San Antonio. The TCC is a consortium of 37 Texas colleges and universities who use one of the Sungard SCT Higher Education products. There were 242 persons registered from thirty Texas institutions. Over twenty of the institutions are in some phase of migrating to Banner. Dr. Charles Burmeister is chairman of the TCC Advisory Board.
Banner Project Management: met with SCT SunGard General Manager and Account Manager for ACCD to discuss status of the implementation effort, review remaining hours on existing contract outline and consulting rates and outline a SCT Training strategy for the summer; engaged in initial discussions with Jackie Beede of AIM, Inc., for facilitating Business Process Assessments (BPAs) of ACCD Student and HR processes later this summer; attended SCT Texas Connection Consortium 2007 Conference held in San Antonio; facilitated several meetings with core Student Team areas including Student Admissions and Records, Financial Aid, and Student Accounting to re-establish project organization, approach and direction; received overview of TracDat software and its role with Strategic Planning and ACCD program assessment; established and engaged a HRIS Sub-committee to define security role definitions for the current HR system, per directives of a HRIS Taskforce, in response to recent Internal Audit findings.

Reviewed Lana Myer’s draft of a new Banner Implementation website in preparation for rollout and extended communication to ACCD constituents later this summer.

Goal I. Access To Higher Education
The Department of Student and Community Program Development, Community Education Centers continue to participate in the “College Connections” initiative and related activities. CEC staff provided Financial Aid Processing, and/or Accuplacer Testing to students at ACE Academy, Edison, Highlands, Holmes, Jay, Jefferson, Kennedy, and Memorial High Schools.
The Office of International Programs has awarded 26 scholarships to students participating in short-term, faculty-led study abroad programs. Each $750 scholarship was funded through generous donations made to the ACCD Foundation. The students are participating in programs to Spain and Turkey.
The Department of Athletics and Natatorium Services registered over 460 children for the summer swim lessons to start on June 4.
Goal II. Student Success
The Department of Student and Community Program Development, Student Leadership Institute Tier I Program students (36) participated in the D.C experience from May 21-26, 2007. Students met with Senator John Cornyn, Congressmen Ciro Rodriguez, Charlie Gonzalez, Henry Cuellar, Congresswoman Shelia Jackson-Lee, Mr. David Bergeron of the Department of Education, Rosa Garcia of HACU. Students also toured the Pentagon and took a bus tour of the city. Students experienced the interactive play “Sheer Madness” at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
The Department of Institutional Advancement is working on the final steps in the Process Improvement Plan that will effectively ensure college and district offices of Student Financial Services or designated Scholarship Offices assume complete responsibility for administering scholarships are being taken (a major issue has been the process for moving funds from the ACCD Foundation to the Student Financial Services accounts, and access to BANNER scholarship gift accounts by Student Financial Services personnel that will empower them to post awards to student accounts.
The Department of Student Financial Services has completed the Satisfactory Progress reports and programs were used to update the 2007-08 financial aid files; Summer Session I tuition bills were paid for students that were awarded and enrolled for summer session I.
Goal III. Workforce Development
The Alamo Community Colleges received national recognition for its workforce development programs. The MPR Associates Inc, under a Lumina Foundation grant, conducted a national study of community college workforce investment programs. The study, Working It Out: Community Colleges and the Workforce Investment Act, recognized the ACCD for leadership and innovative workforce (WIA) solutions. The methodology for selecting the colleges included a national peer nomination process. ACCD was the only Texas College selected and was cited in various sections. The MPR is a “mainstream” workforce development organization that brings a degree of objectivity and credibility to the nomination and selection process. This will give us some bragging rights!
We join an elite group of community colleges who have a strong tradition in the workforce development area such as Cuyahoga, Pina, Portland, Northern Virginia, Denver, Fox Valley, Tacoma, and Maccomb Community Colleges.
The Kerrville ISD and ACCD are working toward the establishment of a new Early College and Workforce Specialty Campus. Leadership teams from ACCD headed by Chancellor Leslie and Superintendent Dan Troxell will meet on June 15, 2007 to formalize agreements. An existing building has been identified; startup technical dual credit. Kerrville would like to begin the Fall semester with approximately 152 dual credit students.
The Department of Professional, Technical and Workforce Education submitted the 2007-2008 application for the Perkins Tech Prep grant project for $432,060.
Goal IV. Capacity to Serve
The Department of Institutional Advancement continues work in developing a proposal to the Motorola Foundation to seek funding for the Ozuna Children’s Library Summer Program at PAC; met with Helen Madla to continue preparing for the “Celebrating the Life of Senator Frank Madla, Jr.” event scheduled for the evening of October 17, 2007; secured names of about 20 potential sponsors from Helen Madla, and staff will follow up.
The SOAR team continues to refine the “Alamo Community Colleges’ Performance Measurement Management” report which provides data on the Chancellor’s Key Performance Priorities related to recruitment (student recruitment/capacity model), retention and completion (with alignment to Achieving the Dream targets), metrics, and remediation levels of First-Time-in-College students.
Goal V. Organizational Communication
The Department of Governmental and Public Relations reported on state appropriation of $67,846,696 for each of the next two years, an increase of $2.4 million a year; new campus funding of $732,791 for 2008 and $555,822 for 2009; and $500,000 for the Student Success Pathway pilot study. This study will provide educators with information to identify gaps in curriculum and develop successful learning methodologies to assist students in their transition from high school to college or workforce success. This study will establish a model that can be expanded statewide.
The Department Governmental and Public Relations started radio spots and print ads to promote summer registration and promoted the Alamo Community Colleges through print ads in support of Juneteenth Celebration in African American Reflections; San Antonio Public Library’s Summer Reading Program in the Express-News, and the sponsorship of a tribute to African American Medal of Honor recipients in La Prensa. Phone bank assistants are contacting 1500 students to encourage on payment of tuition and fees in time for enrollment summer session classes. |
