Goal I. Access to Higher Education
During May, 2007, the Department of Student and Community Program Development Community Education Centers (CECs) provided a total of 3,671 services (financial aid, admissions, assessment, information, etc.) to 1,710 unduplicated individuals and prospective students. Of these students, 1,192 had no prior contact with the Centers. The CEC also continues to participate in the “College Connections” initiative and related activities. CEC staff provided Financial Aid Processing, and/or Accuplacer Testing to students at Clark, Edison, Holmes, Jay, Jefferson, Kennedy High Schools, and Southwest Prepatory School.

Goal III. Workforce Development
Dr. Leslie, Carolyn Kelley & Roland DuBay had lunch with Chris Carruth, Vice President of SKANSKA in the Texas southern region, to develop a stronger relationship, and build potential workforce development support.

The Department of Professional, Technical and Workforce Education and the Automotive Manufacturing Technical and Education Consortia (AMTEC) conducted a national symposium identifying workforce solutions and labor shortages projected for automotive manufacturers. Approximately 55 persons representing fourteen community colleges and GM, UAW, Toyota, and Honda attended. The symposium featured presentations by Ms. Phyllis Eisner, Vice President of the National Association of Manufactures – Dream it, Do it Programs; Mr. Bill Rayl, Jackson Area, Manufacturers Association – K-16 Pipeline Industry Driven Workforce; and, Dr. Federico Zaragoza, Mr. Joe Wilson, and Mr. Rafael Brisita headed the discussions on the ACCD Early College Career Academies for Aviation, Manufacturing and the Information Technology Sectors.

Goal IV. Capacity To Serve
Plats for Northeast Lakeview College, Palo Alto College, St. Philip’s College and San Antonio College are in the final stages of approval by the City of Live Oak, City of Universal City, and the City of San Antonio. Approval of these plats is key to the issuance of Capital Improvement Program building permits.

The Department of Athletics and Natatorium Services hosted the Palo Alto Swim Meet, June 1&2, 2007. Over 300 swimmers from South Texas and Houston participated.

Goal V. Organizational Communication
Dr. Leslie and members of the leadership team met with UTSA administrators as a follow up to a previous meeting held in February, where opportunities for collaboration were discussed. Individuals provided status reports for six key target areas, developed strategies and next steps for each item, and discussed additional opportunities for improving the partnership and the transition for students from the Alamo Community Colleges to UTSA. The group plans to meet again in September.

On June 2nd, the Staff Council sponsored the first ever family picnic for the Alamo Community Colleges. It was a tremendous success and we all look forward to next year. Kudos to the Staff Council!
