| Goal II. Student Success
Dr. Eric Reno, Northeast Lakeview College President, attended the P-16 Regional Council Summit in Austin, TX on June 20-21st. Titled “Creating a College-Going Culture and Well-Educated Communities,” the summit focused on the changing face of the Texas Labor Market and current student career interests, and developed an action plan in response to the data.
Goal IV. Capacity To Serve
Dr. Martha Trevino, Director of College Grants & Development and Kathleen Johnson-Hodge, College Director of Community & Public Relations met with Firstmark Credit Union leadership to discuss the development of a partnership between the financial institution and Northeast Lakeview College. Some topics of discussion included the establishment of financial education programs for students, cooperative community service projects, and increased marketing efforts. Firstmark Credit Union is one of Northeast Lakeview College’s first Endowed Founder’s Scholarship donors.
Goal V. Organizational Communication
College Planning & Management Magazine has recognized the Alamo Community Colleges Northeast Campus Renovation for “Outstanding Architecture and Design in Education” and has identified it as “A Project of Distinction.” The Northeast Campus or former Albertson’s building on 8300 Pat Booker is serving as the college’s temporary campus while the new site is under construction. Acknowledged for its innovative design and transformation of a store-front into a college campus, the project will be included in the June 2007 issue of College Planning & Management’s Education Design Showcase.

Goal I. Access To Higher Education
Northwest Vista College’s Kids Jamboree Summer Camps started on June 4 and will continue through August 7. This year’s camps include the Walk on the Wild Side Dinosaur Camp; the Sea Adventures Camp; the Acting Up! Theater Camp; the Mad Science Camp; the Under the Sea Camp; the Zoology Camp; and the Academic Camp. NVC also has Saturday Children’s Enrichment classes that will continue through July 14. These enrichment classes include art, chess, dancing, drama, guitar, math, science, piano, reading, Spanish, and writing. Both programs have attracted a total of 280 students. NVC has also initiated its first Kids Camps at the Westside Education and Training Center.
Goal IV. Capacity To Serve
The NVC IT Department continued its efforts in providing instructors with the latest technology by purchasing the Creston System for twenty of our classrooms. This system will allow an instructor complete control of all audio-visual equipment for his/her classroom work station. In other words, the instructor can operate the projector screen, ceiling projector, DVD player, and VCR from a single touchpad or computer.
Goal V. Organizational Communication
Northwest Vista College “packed the park” at the San Antonio Missions vs. Midland Rockhounds game on Sunday, June 24. This venue provided an opportunity for the faculty, staff, and students to come together for a fun evening while increasing NVC’s visibility within the surrounding community. Information about the college was also provided to Missions fans as the entered the ballpark.

Goal I. Access To Higher Education
PAC’s Counseling Department completed revisions needed for the 2007-2009 college catalog. Changes included categorizing topics, adding a glossary, organizing areas in a logical sequence, and making additions to the table of contents to make it a more student-friendly publication.
Goal II. Student Success
PAC counselors Mary Apolinar and Janet Rangel attended the Summer Institute on First-Year Assessment Conference in Savannah, Ga., June 10 - 12. The workshops included best practices for assessing student learning and stressed the need for assessment in the first year of college, an initiative of Achieving the Dream. The Summer Institute for First-Year Assessment is designed to maximize opportunities for participant learning and networking, and is structured to create a cumulative learning experience.
Goal III. Workforce Development
PAC instructors and students enrolled in the new CompTIA A+ Computer Certification Training Program will offer local non-profits an opportunity to have their computers inspected for viruses and defects during a free Computer Clinic scheduled at the Westside Education and Training Center, June 30th. This allows non-profits to get free technical support, including advice virus protection, Open Source and Freeware applications, hardware troubleshooting and software updates.

Tina Mesa, Dean of PAC’s Learning Resources Center, has accepted a four year appointment on the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL—a division of the American Library Association) Budget & Finance Committee. The committee’s charge is to annually submit a budget to the ACRL division’s Board of Directors for action, and to assist the Board in aligning the budget with the strategic plan.

PAC’s Learning Resource Center has implemented an online form for faculty members to request library instruction for their classes. The sessions may include instruction on how to identify, access, evaluate and use information resources. The form is accessible from the library’s homepage. Goal I. Access To Higher Education
St. Philip’s College celebrated the 142nd anniversary of the emancipation of slaves in Texas - “Juneteenth”. On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger delivered General Order No. 3 freeing slaves in Texas in accordance with the Emancipation Proclamation and the ending of the Civil War. Dr. Adena Williams Loston provided an educational welcome to an audience that included approximately 250 Kid’s Adventure Camp participants and engaged them in her address about Juneteenth. The celebration included food, kids’ activities, vendors and live entertainment. There were 300 students, faculty, staff and administrators who enjoyed the occasion.
Goal II. Student Success
The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and the Texas Health Information Management Association (TxHIMA) will offer a training session on their virtual lab. Preparations are underway by the Allied Health Department to host this presentation in the Health Information Technology (HIT) computer lab for HIT faculty and members of the medical community. This virtual lab is an essential instructional tool for HIT students and SPC will be exploring the possibility of purchasing the software.

Continuing Education staff met with representatives from Guadalupe Valley Regional Hospital in Seguin to secure use of its nursing lab for purposes of offering a Certified Nurse Aide Program at the Central Texas Technology Center.

IV. Capacity To Serve
Formal approval was received of a $275,000, two-year grant for Hispanic-Serving Institutions from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The focus of the grant is to support and continue “Proyecto Alimento”, a program to identify, recruit, and educate students for a potential career in Nutritional Sciences, achieving an Associate of Applied Science degree at St. Philip’s and transferring to the University of Incarnate Word to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree. Mary Kunz, Chairperson of the Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Arts, will serve as the SPC project director.
The ACCD Board of Trustees and the Military Education Council recognized Mr. Tracy Turpin, ACCD Bookstores Manager, and the Follett Higher Education Group for their support of the military community at Tuesday’s Board meeting.
A meeting is scheduled with the United States Post Office Area Public Relations Officer for a review of the facilities in the Campus Center in which postal services could be housed.
A proposal is under development for possible use of the recently purchased property at 1806 and 1808 Montana Street. The proposal will recommend an educational experience for students in the Homebuilding Trades Program at Southwest Campus.

Mr. John Braxton has once again been sworn in to serve on the San Antonio Commission on Literacy. Mr. Braxton’s new term of office will expire on May 31, 2009.

Goal
I. Access to Higher Education
The San Antonio College Child Development Department and Continuing Education Training Network are partnering with the City of San Antonio’s Office of Community Initiatives (providing a $450,000 grant) and several organizations to promote the professional development of early childhood teachers this Fall. The Child Development Department, UTSA, Positive Beginnings, and Family Services will offer instruction in a series of six courses, and the Continuing Education Network will provide CEU credits for community development. KLRN will provide video programming and a pre- and post-test assessment of cognitive progress. Course topics include Understanding Traumatized and Maltreated Children, The Six Core Strengths for Healthy Childhood Development, The Whole Child (in Spanish and English), I Am Your Child, and Ready for Life. There are already 81 people registered for the first series of courses and 60 registered for the second series.
San Antonio College Counselors participated in the ACCD-LULAC Expo 08 Career Fair at ATC-Kelly USA this week, to promote San Antonio College programs for prospective students.
The Radio-TV-Film Department hosted the 13th Annual San Antonio Underground Film Festival on June 22. A lineup of independent films were shown in the Longwith Radio-TV, and Film Building auditorium, from Noon-4:30 p.m. and 5-9 p.m.
