Goal I. Access To Higher Education
Dr. Roberto Gonzales is currently recruiting the first cohort of students for the Sustaining Talent in Education to Launch Learning and Research (STELLAR) in Science and Engineering Project. This project, funded by a $522,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education, is designed to increase the number of under-represented and economically needy students majoring in the science and engineering disciplines as well support the persistence, retention, success and graduation of participating students. The students will be able to take advantage of academic seminars, faculty mentoring and advising, opportunities to do extensive laboratory research, bi-monthly student forums, and a lap top lending program. Students who are chosen will be designated Millennium Scholars and will receive a $1,000 stipend per year for two years. Ultimately, graduates of this program will be prepared for the university level research environment.

Goal III. Workforce Development
The Alamo Community College District and Northwest Vista College were recently awarded a $474,000 Governor’s Industry Cluster grant for the development of the Texas Institute for Educational Robotics (TIER).

Today, the core of TIER exists in a summer program at NVC called SpaceTEAMS. SpaceTEAMS is a partnership between industry, education, government and community supporters to bring exploratory Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) education to area schools. This program reaches 100 elementary and middle school students through a two-week robotics summer camp. The grant will help to extend the program to fifty high school students, enhance the curriculum and teacher training, and establish a regionally-focused Robotics Support Center. This support center will help connect our efforts with existing elementary and middle school efforts in robotics, completing a P16 pipeline for STEM education and careers. During the second year of this grant, the TIER will be created and SpaceTEAMS will be packaged for replication in San Antonio and throughout Texas.

Goal V. Organizational Communication
Christine Godin, Director of Learning Resources, has been appointed to the Excellence in Academic Libraries Award selection committee for the Association of College and Research Libraries.
