Two SAC Professors Honored as Emeritus
At their regular March meeting, the Board of Trustees named Ray Cox and Frank Hein, who retired from teaching at San Antonio College, as Professors Emeritus in Visual Arts and Technololgy.
Both Cox and Hein contributed to the college and department by chairing the Exhibitions program, promoting student success/retention/recruitment through academic excellence in teaching, and served on various departmental and college committees. They also served as an inspiration to their colleagues by their dedication to Visual Arts education and their artistic vision. Both always maintained high standards in their teaching, and in their own artwork.
Ray Cox began teaching art at San Antonio College in1974 and retired in May 2005. He earned Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and received a nomination for Piper Professor in recognition for his teaching. Cox produced his own artwork and exhibited it locally, and throughout the state, and he engaged in community outreach/service programs by donating his artwork to benefit exhibitions such as the Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital. He also was a departmental representative to the Texas Association of Schools of Art.
Frank Hein began teaching art at San Antonio College in 1967 and retired in May 2005. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He was named “Artist of the Year” in 1971 and received the Judge’s Award for Excellence in 2001 from the San Antonio Art League. He produced his own artwork and exhibited his work locally, and across the state and the nation. Hein also engaged in community outreach/service programs by donating his artwork and supporting fundraising efforts by the San Antonio Art League, SaySi, and the American Heart Fund’s “Art to Heart” auction. He was a member of the Texas Community College Teachers Association.

| SAC Professor of English Bill Shute will be the featured author at a poetry reading/book signing Saturday, March 31, from 3-4:30 p.m. at Viva Bookstore, 8407 Broadway. He will read from his new book, Point Loma Purple, a 3300+ line, 18-section, book-length poem telling the story and capturing the character of early 20th century spiritual leader and social activist Katherine Tingley, founder of the utopian community at Point Loma, California. This will also be the first San Antonio opportunity to purchase a copy of the book ($10, which also includes a free, limited edition chapbook of your choice). In addition to speaking about the book and reading from it, Shute will also be reading from some of his recent chapbooks. |

| Northwest
Vista College art instructor Jack Robbins was selected as the judge for the 36th Annual International Art Show at the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art. Robbins is known for his public art projects and is a participating artist in the Texas Commission on the Arts Roster. |

| NVC English instructor Melinda Zepeda read creative nonfiction at San Antonio College’s Women’s History Week celebration on March 8. The reading was titled, “Memoir: Reflections by Patricia Portales and Melinda Zepeda.” Melinda’s readings focused on her childhood and adolescent perspectives of growing up in a rural Texas town while negotiating her Mexican-American heritage. |

| NVC Academic Leader Homer Guevara, Jr. led his Prince of Peace Catholic Church Pee Wee Division I boys’ basketball team to the 2006-2007 C.Y.O. City Championship. The team comprised nine-year-old boys who finished the season with an outstanding 21-2 record; the team also won the Zone 6 Western Division and the Zone 6 Championship. |
