Goal I. Access To Higher Education
For the second year in a row, Northwest Vista College hosted the Space TEAMS camp, a fun and interactive experience for children in grades 4-8 to design and rebuild robots. The program, which runs for two weeks from July 23-August 3, serves about 100 students who form a total of 20 teams. The camp culminates in a competition where students race robots via the programming they have typed into the robots’ makeshift brains. This program—developed in partnership with the City of San Antonio, Edgewood ISD, Southside ISD, Harlandale ISD, Tex Prep, and the KISS Institute for Practical Robotics—addresses the education, workforce and economic development needs of San Antonio youth who come from low-income families. The program specifically targets female students who are traditionally underrepresented in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.
On July 11-13, the NVC Recruitment Team attended the Noel Levitz Recruitment and Retention Conference in Orlando, Florida. The conference allows recruiters from across the nation to share best practices and attend sessions that expand their knowledge of the latest recruitment tools and strategies. Sessions included “Relating, Not Translating: How to Market and Recruit Latino Students and Their Parents,“ “Using Public Relations to Support Enrollment Management,” and “Leading Transformational Change: Using Data and Accountability for Student Success.” The Recruitment Team was also able to attend a presentation by Sara Martinez-Tucker, the Under Secretary of Education.
Goal III. Workforce Development
NVC faculty at the Westside Education and Training Center will be participating in a $359,495 Self-Sufficiency Fund grant administered by the Texas Workforce Commission. This grant helps individuals transition from public assistance back into the workforce. NVC faculty will train students for 136 patient care assistant, public health aid and health educator jobs. The consortium includes Christus Santa Rosa, the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District and El Centro Del Barrio.

Goal IV. Capacity To Serve
PAC’s Children’s Library Summer Program “Matter Matters 2007” completed its second three-week session, July 26. Fifty 3rd and 4th graders from area schools attended the free program that focused on chemistry and related laboratory activities. Classes were taught by student teaching interns who were supervised and mentored by the Lead Librarian of the Children’s Services Division. The program was funded by an ACCD Foundation grant, Palo Alto College, and the City of San Antonio’s Free Lunch Program.
Goal V. Organizational Communication
PAC’s Natatorium hosted the 2007 Speedo Long Course Sectional Championships, July 25-29. The Speedo Sectional featured dramatic races on the final night of the long course meter swimming. Sean Leneave, representing the Woodlands Swim Team, closed out the meet with two titles. He won the 200 fly in 2:05.87 over Wesley Mullins, 17, of Longhorn Aquatics (2:07.75). Leneave then claimed the 200 IM in 2:07.90 to defeat Clint Hallum of the Dallas Mustangs (2:11.20). Goal I. Access To Higher Education
Dozens of volunteers that included faculty, staff and students from St. Philip’s College, participated in the Houston Street Fair on Saturday. Recruiting materials and information about various programs at the Main and Southwest campuses were distributed to the public. St. Philip’s College was exposed to hundreds of tourists, military personnel and local members of the community. Recruiters were on hand explaining the admissions process to attendees at the Fair.
Goal II. Student Support
An energetic retention and enrollment effort was started with the Enrollment Made Easy Campaign. Almost 13,000 cards were mailed to former students who had enrolled during fall 2006 or spring 2007 but who had not yet re-enrolled at St. Philip’s College. These students were invited to return to the College on Wednesday, July 25, for focused advising, updating of their degree or certificate plans, and expedited registration. In response, 279 students returned – 106 at St. Philip’s College’s MLK campus on the Eastside of San Antonio and 173 at St. Philip’s Southwest Campus. These returning students received refreshments and updated academic advising from counselors, advising staff, and advisors in residence who are assigned to each of the instructional departments. From this major effort, more than 100 students from the 279 attending the event were registered for classes, contributing to the current 10% increase in the fall 2007 enrollment when compared to the same period in August 2006.
