St. Philip's College Jump Starts National Night Out With a Community Kickoff

More than 800 children, students, faculty, staff and community members and leaders attended a kickoff celebration for National Night Out on the main campus of St. Philip’s College. The event was co-sponsored by the ACCD Police Department, San Antonio Police Department, San Antonio Fighting Back and Target stores. The event included a parade and a flyover by the San Antonio Police Department’s Blue Eagle helicopter. Crime prevention information was distributed and children were finger-printed and offered identification cards at the event. The event was covered by every major television network in the market.

Firstmark Credit Union Contributes $5,000 to Northeast Lakeview College Scholarship Fund

Firstmark Credit Union of San Antonio has established a Founder’s Endowment Scholarship in the amount of $5,000 for students at Northeast Lakeview College, the newest of the Alamo Community Colleges. Managed by the ACCD Foundation, a named Founder’s Scholarship Endowment provides a perpetual source of income, from which the proceeds are then awarded. The accrued funds from the Firstmark Credit Union Founder’s Scholarship Endowment will be used to award scholarships to generations of Northeast Lakeview College students. The first student scholarship from the proceeds of this contribution will be awarded in Fall 2008.

“Northeast Lakeview College is please to establish a partnership with an institution with an extensive history in San Antonio such as Firstmark Credit Union,” said Dr. Eric Reno, Northeast Lakeview College president. “It is through partnerships such as this that Northeast Lakeview College and Firstmark Credit Union, jointly, will continue to build quality life for citizens of our community.”

It addition to the Founder’s Endowment Scholarship, contributions are also being accepted for Founder’s Scholarships and to the General Scholarship Fund. Other donation opportunities, including the naming of buildings, facilities, and smaller institutional items are also available. St. Philip’s College was selected to partner with the School of Excellence in Education in San Antonio to establish a math and science academy focusing on underserved students. This week, the Texas Education Agency awarded $1.2 million dollars to four Texas schools for the Texas Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (T-STEM) academies. The School of Excellence was one of them. Through the dual credit program, St. Philip’s College will offer six dual credit hours per student at no cost to the students or to the School of Excellence in Education. With a successful dual credit program between SPC and the School of Excellence in Education’s STEM academy, St. Philip’s will be providing the equivalent of $72,000 in tuition.


San Antonio College’s Institutional Report on Distance Education and Off-Campus Instruction has been given full approval by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Distance Education Advisory Committee. In a letter to Distance Education Director Helen Torres, Assistant Commissioner Joseph Stafford said, “We at the Coordinating Board … wish San Antonio College much success in its delivery of distance education and off-campus instruction, and we are grateful for all your efforts to make quality education available to students in Texas.”
