Department of Public Safety
During the week of August 8-14, Department of Public Safety members responded to or generated 446 calls for service.
DPS officers issued 45 Crime Prevention Reminders and
DPS participated in student orientation sessions district-wide for incoming freshmen.
Employee Services
The Benefits Unit held four Summer Enrollment meetings attended by approximately 100 total employees.
The Training and Employee Development Unit launched the district’s new Leadership Development Program called Alamo Community Colleges Leadership Academy for Success (ALAS). The purpose of ALAS is to assist in developing, enhancing, and preparing effective leaders with the knowledge and skills to meet the needs of the organization. In addition, the Academy will foster employee and student success in support of our mission of becoming the best community college in the nation.
Facilities Operations and Construction Management
A Northeast Lakeview College Facilities Department awards recognition ceremony was held where four employees were recognized for a combined 37 years of service to the Alamo Community Colleges.
A Northwest Vista College Facilities Department awards recognition ceremony was held where 13 employees were recognized for a combined 129 years of service to the Alamo Community Colleges.
Renovation of the second floor of the Westside Education Service Center is complete and ready for classes on August 27.
One of the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) parking lots at Northwest Vista College (NVC) is complete and ready for students to use when classes start on August 27. Approximately 250 additional parking spots are available.
An assessment of the proposed Kerrville facility has been completed and will be discussed at the August 21 board meeting.

Goal I. Access To Higher Education
Plans are underway for the upcoming National Coalition for Advanced Technology Center Conference (NCATC) to be held at the Sheraton Gunter Hotel from October 3-6, hosted by the ACCD Economic & Workforce Development division. The conference theme will be “Securing Global Economic Competitiveness” with a focus on technologies and workforce training in driver industries such as Aerospace, Homeland Security, Biomedicine, and Manufacturing.
Agenda topics and speakers are being finalized for the second annual Global Education Leadership Institute 2007 to be held from November 7-9 at the Advanced Technology Center. Invited attendees include primarily Chief Executive officers and College Presidents from Central and South America.
The Community Education Centers (3) provided outreach at the 3rd Annual Adult Education
and Workforce “Aligning Pathways” Conference held at the Region 20 Education Service Center and St. Philip’s College National Night Out event.
The Westside Community Education Coordinator presented (2 sessions) at Third Annual Adult Education & Workforce Conference: Aligning Pathways to promote ACCD and CEC colleges, programs and services to adult education teachers at Region 20 Conference Center.
Goal III. Workforce Development
The Business Outreach staff met with the National SER Executive Committee on a decision to train 25 SECEP case managers on the Workforce Professional Certification competencies.
A draft on a “Nursing Shortage Study – Final Report” was completed by Business Outreach staff.
Also, the development of a brochure to recruit nursing faculty was completed and will be distributed throughout the ACCD service region.
Work continues daily on overseeing Perkins and Tech Prep programmatic and fiscal matters, primarily trying to clear outstanding encumbrances for both district and colleges. The District Perkins Contact met with the college contacts to provide personal guidance and assistance in working with their account.
Goal IV. Capacity to Serve
The Westside Education Training Center (WETC) has 1,303 students enrolled to date. Another 3,348 were served at the center for purposes other than enrollment, such as community lab usage, advising, and pre-enrollment services.
Goal V. Organizational Communication
The Eastside Community Education Center Coordinator represented ACCD at the roundtable discussions during the Pasadena-California Alumni Support Center Visit. An overview and orientation was provided about San Antonio/ACCD Community Transition Services in Region 11, including its community partners and collaboration services.
Leo Zuniga, Dr. Leslie and Mr. Zarate attended the Senate Higher Education Subcommittee meeting in Austin on Monday and Tuesday, August 13-14. Dr. Leslie and Mr. Zarate provided testimony regarding the implications of Governor Perry’s veto of community colleges’ health insurance funding. Mr. Steve Harper, Assistant Manager, Human resources, Toyota Manufacturing, Texas, Inc. provided testimony on how ACCD has been instrumental in Toyota’s success. The legislative hearing and testimony was covered in a story in the Express-News on 8/15.
The Governmental and Public Relations department produced a substantial number of additional workforce ads funded by Perkins money. Ads scheduled for publication include the Express-News, Conexion, 210, the Express-News tabloid targeted to a teen and young adult audience, Express-News Back-To-School section, La Prensa, San Antonio Business Journal, Bandera Courier, New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung, and the Seguin Daily News. Also, ads are scheduled on the SAC nursing program for the Express-News and La Prensa to respond to the Express-News story on proprietary schools vs. community colleges. |
