| Goal I. Access To Higher Education
Northeast Lakeview College participated in the Converse Economic Development Expo on September 10-11, 2007. Its purpose was to facilitate a platform where businesses, government, and community organizations came together with mutually beneficial interests. Participants received an update on the development and construction progress on the new Northeast Lakeview College and potential NLC workforce development partnerships were discussed.
Goal II. Student Support
Northeast Lakeview College held its first Student Organization Rush on September 12-13, 2007 where NLC students had the opportunities to learn about the various organizations on campus. Eight new and existing organizations participated in the event. Over 175 students expressed an interest in campus activities and were surveyed on their general interests. The two most popular organizations visited were the Spanish Club and the Christian Organization.
Goal IV. Capacity To Serve
Dr. Eric Reno, NLC President, has been recognized as an “Honorary Commander” on behalf of the 12th Flying Training Wing at Randolph AFB. As “Honorary Commander,” Reno will strengthen the partnership between Northeast Lakeview College and the military. The program focuses on integrating community leaders into the Air Force Family. Reno will actively learn more about the military mission while the individual units learn more about the community where they serve.
Dr. Reno is the newly elected 2007-2008 President of the Higher Education Council of San Antonio and presided over the meeting on September 10, 2007. The meeting was held as UIW’s new Feik School of Pharmacy.

Goal IV. Capacity to Serve
The National Association of Developmental Education (NADE) Certification Council has awarded the Math Advocacy Center at Northwest Vista College their NADE Certification at the Advanced Level. Northwest Vista College’s program is only the third tutoring services program in the nation to earn certification at the Advanced Level, joining Stephen F. Austin State University and Utah Valley College’s Writing Center in this honor. The Math Advocacy Center was developed under a Title V grant received by the college in 2001 and serves between 10% and 15% of the developmental math populations.
This program was conceived as an opportunity for developmental math students who miss a class or have difficulty with a topic--frequently cited as the underlying cause of student drops or failures--to catch up through individual tutoring. Additionally the Advocacy Center provides equal access to the one-to-one tutoring and advisement regardless of whether their instructor is full or part time -- in other words the Center provides the institutional equivalent of office hours. Additionally this program is the center of “drop counseling”, CRLA certified tutor training, and a place to share our culture and values with new faculty. The Center allows NVC to address issues as diverse as our students. The resulting measures of Success and Course Completion by the students using the Advocacy Center were noted as strengths of the institution by examiners from the Texas Award for Performance Excellence.
This Title V project providing advocacy for Math students has been successfully adapted for English (developmental and college level) and reading and is being considered in other disciplines.

Goal I. Access To Higher Education
PAC’s Intensive English Program’s “Bring-a-Buddy” recruitment event was a success with 16 guests attending 2 hours of intensive English classes. Guests were introduced to the program’s “Focal Skills Approach” to language learning and the modules used in the course.
Goal II. Student Support
PAC’s Veterinary Technology Program received notice that they had a 100 percent pass rate in both the National and State Board Exams for all 14 students that graduated in May 2007. PAC’s Vet Tech Program was the only program nationally to have a 100 percent pass rate.
Goal III. Workforce Development
PAC’s Corporate and Community Education Division began H.E.B.’s first professional development training program. The training is designed to offer employees the opportunity to advance from Team Coordinators to Team Leaders. The three course module system will offer partners 120 total hours of training in goal setting, time management, conflict resolution, effective meeting guidelines, problem solving, group decisions, business communication, presentation skills, supervision, theories of total quality management, internal customer service, and stress management.
Goal IV. Capacity To Serve
Mark Hogensen, an Associate Professor of Art, exhibited his paintings at the McNay Contemporary Collectors Forum “Artist Looking at Art” series. In his work, Hogensen uses color and pattern to explore perspective and space. For the McNay, he installed three paintings adjacent to stained glass windows from the Oppenheimer collection, creating a dialogue in which decorative elements and architecture play a critical role. Goal V. Organizational Communication
The current issue of San Antonio Woman magazine features an article highlighting PAC librarians Sandi Hood and Camille Fiorillo efforts in putting together a “Speed Dating with Mystery Authors” event at the annual meeting of the Texas Library Association. More than 165 librarians participated in the event that had 15 authors rotating among dining tables to discuss their books and writing processes. Participating authors included Rick Riordan, Robert E. Armstrong, Susan McBride and James Reasoner.

Goal I. Access To Higher Education
Through a partnership with the Good Samaritan Center, 14 targeted at risk youths (as identified by the Bexar County Court System) successfully completed Customer Service Exploratory Training. Students were introduced to employment concepts related to employer and client expectations in the workplace. Focus was placed on concepts associated with good business practices and the responsibilities of a good employee. Students were also familiarized with computer application skills presently necessary in the workplace.
Dual credit staff met with North East Independent School District representatives and assisted in the collection process of employment packets for potential St. Philip's College adjunct faculty to teach dual credit. Work is also underway on a new dual credit model that will allow tracking of critical documents.
Goal II. Student Support
On Wednesday and Thursday, September 5 and 6, the SPC Advisors in Residence (AIRs) held a Meet Your Advisor event as part of the “Get the Scoop” College-wide welcome activity. Convening outside the Heritage Room and the College Cafeteria, the Advisors shared information with 150 students and staff members about the role of Advisors as well as information related to program majors and course offerings.
Goal III. Workforce Development
Certificates of completion were awarded to 12 students at the Bexar County Detention Center who completed a customized training program consisting of 125 hours of culinary instruction. These students are inmates identified by the Sheriff’s Office as low risk and were offered this training in an attempt to provide workforce skills that will enable them to successfully integrate back into the workforce after their time is served.

The Office of Community and Public Relations met with VIA Metropolitan Transit and members of the San Antonio Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission. St. Philip's College will serve as a major transportation hub for the thousands of people who plan to march in the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. March. St. Philip's College will be highlighted in VIA and city promotions as a viable transportation source for participants in the March.
Goal V. Organizational Communication
The president of the college hosted a day-long retreat for the administrative leadership team on September 18. The team refined the College’s strategic directions in relationship to achieving the District’s goals by identifying clear and measurable action items to address Key Performance Indicators. In addition, the team developed standardized performance based procedures for resource allocation.

Goal II. Student Support
The Political Science Department, chaired by Dr. Paul W. Wilson, sponsored a celebration of “Constitution Day 2007” for students, faculty and staff on September 17 in the Longwith Radio, TV and Film Building. The event featured a discussion and debate on the Constitution and a reflection on the philosophical purpose of the Bill of Rights.
San Antonio College’s annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration began with a week of activities, including a welcome by Dr. Kristine Clark, Executive Vice President, a keynote address on “Latino leadership, Culture and Intellect,” by Andy Hernandez, Executive Director of the Wesley Center for Family & Neighborhood Development; a performance by a youth Folkloric Group from Monterrey, Mexico; a talk on “Chicano Music Traditions,” by Joan Tejeda, Conjunto musician and Instructor at Palo Alto College; a talk by award-winning poet and novelist Michele Serros; a panel discussion by the Inka Clothing Co. on “Art Meets Business;” a performance by the Piñata Protest Band; and a screening of the movie “Pan’s Labyrinth.” Co-Chairs of the Hispanic Heritage Celebration Committee are Rosa Maria Gonzalez (Counseling) and Patricia Portales (English).

The classroom of Tanyia McCall, Instructor in Room 110 of the Early Childhood Center at San Antonio College, has been certified as a Pioneer Texas School Ready Classroom by the State Center for Early Childhood Development. Yolanda Cruz is her assistant teacher. The “Texas Readiness Certification” awards were presented at a press conference at the San Antonio Main Library. According to Dr. Susan Landry, Director, this classroom “has met the Texas School Readiness Certification System criteria for being a Texas School Ready classroom. As you are among the first group to be certified, you are considered a Pioneer Texas School Ready Classroom.” Landry added that the classroom has “established an environment that facilitated the preschool children who graduated and entered Texas public kindergarten in 2006-2007 school year to have the cognitive and social skills needed to be successful in school.”
The San Antonio College Scobee Planetarium was one of five planetariums featured in the October 2007 issue of “Astronomy: The world’s best-selling astronomy magazine” in the article titled “Astronomy Thrives in Texas.” The other planetariums included in the article are Comanche Springs Astronomy Campus, Central Texas Astronomical Society Turner Research Station, George Observatory, and McDonald Observatory.
The photographs of College Photographer Leonard Ziegler will be on display throughout the fall semester in the Moody Learning Center’s 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors. A special reception in his honor was held on September 20. “The photos depict scenes of south San Antonio and his love of water, flowers, cars and other elements that make San Antonio a unique city,” said Eileen Oliver, Assistant Professor, Library and Media Services.
