PAC's Upward Bound Students Awarded Scholarships

Five Palo Alto College Upward Bound program students received scholarships from the Cesar Chavez Legacy and Education Foundation! They are:

Jesus McDonald            $1,500              Lytle High School

Ben Hernandez              $1,000              Poteet High School

Adriana Guajardo           $1,000              Jourdanton High School

Rigoberto Amaya              $500             Poteet High School

Teresa Garza                    $500              Poteet High School

The students are pictured above with Rosa Rosales (l), national president of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), at the Chavez Foundation Dinner where they received their award Friday night. On Saturday, the Upward Bound Students participated in the 11th Annual Cesar Chavez March that drew more than 20,000 participants in San Antonio. Picture below (right) with some of the students is Dr. Federico Zaragoza, ACCD’s vice chancellor for professional, technical and workforce education.


NVC President Claunch and Van De Walle-Dreher Honored

Northwest Vista College President Dr. Jacqueline Claunch and ACCD Foundation Board chairperson Jackie Van De Walle-Dreher were honored at the 11th Annual "Salute to Outstanding Women in Action" awards gala sponsored by La Prensa, San Antonio's only bilingual newspaper. The awards ceremony is held in celebration of Women's History Month and honors women with an impressive professional background and a long history of community involvement.

Claunch, who has been president of NVC since 1998, received an award for outstanding achievements in education. Under her leadership, NVC was recognized by the MetLife Foundation as one of only four "best-practice community colleges" in the nation to receive a student retention initiative award.

Van De Walle-Dreher was presented the award for outstanding achievements in community service. She has been a member of the ACCD Foundation Board since early 1997 and has served as chairperson since later that same year.



Northwest Vista College student Virginia Montez has been awarded the San Antonio College and Universities Career Centers Association 2007 Student Achievement Award. She will receive a check for $500 at an award luncheon on April 13. According to Montez' supervisor, "I have witnessed first hand her dedication to her studies. She is not one to miss her classes or neglect her studies. her overall GPA reflects her efforts."

San Antonio College's student newspaper, The Ranger, has been named the best non-daily campus paper by the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors.
