NLC, NVC Faculty, Students Journey to Monterrey for MOAS Workshop

(l to r) NLC student Claudia Fidencio, instructor Silvia Zecca, and students Richard Garcia, Jacob Durr, Margarita Thomas and Crystal McMonnies traveled to Monterrey, Mexico for the MOAS workshop.

Silvia Zecca, NLC Spanish instructor
, accompanied a group of five NLC students to Monterrey, Mexico to participate in the Model Organization of American Studies Workshop (MOAS) held at the Universidad de Monterrey (University of Monterrey). The organization is similar to other multicultural and multilateral forums, like the Model United Nations. In MOAS, students learn the art of international negotiation, policymaking, social and economic development, and debate. Representing NLC, the students had the opportunity to learn and apply the parliamentary procedures of debate and caucusing. They also explored how to function in working groups of countries that share common interests and understand the operation of the committees that report to the General Assembly. The students will now participate in the “General Assembly – MOAS Tournament” at St. Mary’s University on November 1-3rd.

Carlo Acosta, NVC history instructor, served as coordinator of the NVC MOAS team
. MOAS representation from NVC included Anissa de la Garza, Chadwick Cardenas, Debborah Bratton and Gisella Sankian. They were joined by students from 20 other colleges and universities. Each of these schools chose to represent a specific Latin American country and created actions and resolutions for that nation. Northwest Vista College students chose to represent Haiti.
“We are very proud of our students,” said Acosta “They were great ambassadors for NVC and showed great poise in participating in the workshops, activities and lessons.”
The next step for Northwest Vista College students is to prepare a position paper on the policies and practices of Haiti. The findings will be presented at a convention titled “General Assembly – MOAS Tournament” on November 1-3 at St. Mary’s University. Additional students that will be joining NVC representatives at the convention include Jose Resendez, Jose Saenz, Melissa Serna and Jeannice Perez.

Jayne King, Northwest Vista College assistant professor of dance, performed with the San Antonio Modern Dancers' Co-Laboratory (MoDACoLab) on October 20th. The MoDACoLab presented an interactive performance with live music for a Family Day at the San Antonio Museum of Art.
