SAC Associate Professor of History Dr. Carol A. Keller presented a paper “HemisFair ’68 and the Cultural Matrix of San Antonio” at the recent Community College Humanities Association National Conference in San Antonio, as a member of the panel representing community college faculty who participated in the 2005-06
American Cities & Public Spaces Research Institute at
the Library of Congress. The Institute was sponsored by
CCHA in collaboration with the Library of Congress
Office of Scholarly Programs and funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Panel members
included (l-r), Bill Paquette, Tidewater Community
College, VA; Lisa Tyler, Sinclair Community College, OH; Dr. Keller; and John Lawlor, Reading Area
Community College, PA. Papers from the institute will
be published in December in a special edition of the
Community College Humanities Review.

Arturo Vasquez, NVC English faculty, has been selected as the poetry editor for the San Antonio Express-News. He will serve in that role from January through March of 2008. Congratulations! |

| Earl Ballou, PAC Instructor of Protective Services, has arranged a service learning project for PAC’s forensic science students. Students will perform 60 hours of service under the supervision of the San Antonio Police Department’s crime scene investigation unit, working with homicide detectives and patrol units. SAPD is also allowing forensic science students to use their “village” to work on crime scene investigation projects.

Helen Kirk, PAC professor of mathematics, presented at the Teaching with Technology Symposium at the University of Texas in El Paso, Nov. 9. The title of her presentation was “The Peaks and Valleys of Curriculum Change; from Modular Instruction, Self-Paced Instruction and other Curriculum Re-Design.”

Katharine Cartwright, NVC assistant professor of music, presented a paper on "Dhanashree Pandit-Rai's Hindustani-Jazz Collaborations" at the international conference of the Society for Ethnomusicology in Columbus, Ohio. She serves as a community volunteer for Trinity University's KRTU 91.7 FM, where she hosts "Planet Jazz," a weekly radio show featuring jazz and improvisation from around the world, Monday evenings from 8:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.

Vincent Hardy, St. Philip’s College Theatre Program coordinator, has been nominated as a candidate for the 2007-2008 San Antonio Theater Coalition (SATCO) board. Hardy holds a Masters of Fine Arts from Cornell University. He has directed such St. Philip’s College Theatre Productions as Ain’t Misbehavin’, Romeo and Juliet, Five Guys Named Moe, and most recently, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? In honor of the 2008 Black History month, he is scheduled to perform a one-man show about the world-renowned African-American man of arts and letters, Paul Robeson. This production runs at the SPC Watson Fine Arts Center Theatre in February. For information, call the SPC Fine Arts Department Office at 531-3321.
