Goal III. Workforce Development
Dr. Cindy Griffith, Dean of Workforce Development and Continuing Education, recently attended the spring conference of Texas Association of College Technical Educators in Austin. The focus of the meeting, “From Good to Great – Preparing a Transitioning Texas Workforce,” included various speakers from community colleges and businesses throughout the state.

Goal IV. Capacity To Serve
Northeast Lakeview College participated in the Susan G. Komen “Race for the Cure” on March 31st. The college had eleven walkers and raised over $1200 to aid in the fight against breast cancer.

Pat Terrell, Special Assistant to the President at Northeast Lakeview College received the “District Council of Chairs Award” by the ACCD District Council of Departmental Chairs on April 2nd at the Annual Chairs Luncheon held at the Institute of Texan Cultures. Terrell was selected from several nominees based on his dedication to the Alamo Community College District, commitment to education, and supportive and effective leadership style.

Goal V. Organizational Communication
Ten representatives from Northeast Lakeview College attended the Alamo Insurance Group, Inc. Celebrity Golf Tournament & Gala on March 29th. Sponsored by Alamo Insurance Group, the gala was followed by a golf tournament. Proceeds from the gala and golf tournament benefited the Judson ISD Education Foundation.

 


 

 

Goal I. Access To Higher Education
On March 31, Northwest Vista College hosted its first open house. Over 180 students from Northside Independent School District visited the campus with their parents to learn more about financial aid, admissions and the programs offered by the college. College representatives from the Business Office and Student Financial Services, as well as academic areas, were available to greet attendees and answer questions.

Northwest Vista College welcomed over 100 students from Oliver Wendell Holmes High School for the second annual Holmes Day on March 30. This year’s event focused on increasing students’ knowledge of financial aid. Students also spent the day in interactive sessions on dual credit, history, art appreciation, multimedia video editing and gaming, and college writing. The overall intent of this effort was to show students that college can be a part of their future.

Goal II. Student Success
NVC’s Spring Into Action Career Expo was held on March 28. Students were encouraged to register on Wildcat Classifieds and stop by the Career and Transfer Services (CaTS) Center before the Expo to pick up a complete list of employers and to schedule an appointment for resume assistance.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Northwest Vista College drama program presented "What a Piece of Work is Man," a collection of dramatic pieces which continues students’ experimentation with and exploration of “activist theatre.” The play strives to make the audience as much an activist as the performers.

Goal I. Access to Higher Education
Approximately 35 students enrolled in the Upward Bound Program at PAC participated in the 11th Annual Cesar Chavez March that drew more than 20,000 participants in downtown San Antonio March 31. Dr. Federico Zaragoza, ACCD’s Vice Chancellor Professional, Technical and Workforce Education joined the students for the march and spoke with them individually and collectively.

Goal II. Student Success
Five students enrolled in the Upward Bound Program at PAC received scholarships from the Cesar Chavez Legacy and Education Foundation during an awards ceremony March 30. They were Jesus McDonald, Lytle H.S., $1,500; Ben Hernandez, Poteet H. S., $1,000; Adriana Guajardo, Jourdanton H.S., $1,000; Rigoberto Amaya, Poteet H.S., $500; and Teresa Garza, Poteet H.S., $500.

Goal IV. Capacity To Serve
PAC’s Dean of Learning Resources and two librarians attended a Texas Library Association (TLA) program committee meeting to coordinate final arrangements for the 2007 State-wide TLA Conference being held in San Antonio April 11-14. The conference will feature 230 programs and events, along with 450 vendors, as well as librarians from throughout Texas.

Goal V. Organizational Communication
PAC’s PACfest Committee, along with a San Antonio Health Department representative, met with 20 community food vendors to discuss sanitation, rules and regulations regarding food handling, preparation and service during the College’s upcoming Official Fiesta San Antonio event.

 

Goal II. Student Success
The Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs sponsored Honors Week activities beginning with the Lighting of the Future Ceremony, honoring students’ achievements on April 2 and the Honors Convocation held on April 3 honoring 180 students with a certificate and a pin. Approximately 100 family members were in attendance. A reception followed.

On Saturday, March 31, 2007, the African American Men on the Move hosted a picnic for St. Philip’s College single mothers with sons. The day was filled with activity. The young men had a session on manners, the value of chores, developing a positive self image and sportsmanship (hosted by the men’s intramural basketball team). Each participant received a “What I want to be when I grow up” photo, a series of inspirational quotes for guidance and a toy. The mothers, who participated with their sons, received a day of support and camaraderie.

James Wright conducted a tour of Southwest Campus for Dr. Robert J. Durón, Superintendent of the San Antonio Independent School District, and SAISD Board members. Dr. Durón is interested in expanding SAISD partnerships for students interested in acquiring workforce marketable skills certificates.

Tutoring has been expanded in the following areas:
Chemistry tutoring has been expanded by 11 additional hours per week for a total of 41 hours; Criminal Justice tutoring is now offered 14 hours per week; English tutoring has been expanded to an additional 14 hours per week for a total of 51hours; Biology tutoring has been expanded to an additional 10 hours per week for a total of 47 hours; and Tutoring services in Math and English are available in the Turbon Center, Monday – Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The SPC student organizations hosted a reception for Dr. Loston. Various student groups had the opportunity to tell the new President about student organizations and their activities.

Goal III. Workforce Development
The first two classes of the Alamo Work Source Job Coaching/Pre-Vocational Services Program were completed with great success. The second group will commence their program on April 9, 2007.
Jorge Trevino met with the San Antonio Hartford Insurance Branch Office to explore the delivery of Welding Shop Safety course to 60 agents in the San Antonio area.

Goal IV. Capacity To Serve
IT staff members were very busy last week. The following projects were the main focus of their efforts:
o Supporting more than 1600 students in the open computer labs on the MLK campus
o Supporting students and faculty who use the computer labs as part of their regular class-time.
o Installing and trouble shooting the nursing software in labs on the MLK campus and in the lab in Seguin
o Installing, trouble shooting, and fine tuning the StarBak video on demand system
o Working on an enterprise-wide back up plan

Goal I. Access to Higher Education
Dr. Jonathan Lee, Associate Professor of History, has been selected by Gov. Rick Perry as the only community college representative among eight co-chairs to head subject-specific teams on the Commission for College Ready Texas.

Goal II. Student Success
The following students were honored at the 35th Annual Skills USA College/Postsecondary Division State Leadership Conference competition held in San Antonio March 22-24. They will go on to national competition in Kansas City, June 26-29:

In Dental Assisting, Tricia Chapa placed 1st, Leah Sevilla placed 2nd, and Kelli DeGrassi placed 3rd. (On the written test, DeGrassi placed 1st, Sevilla placed 2nd, and Chapa placed 3rd.)

In Engineering Technologies, Ryan Gernsbacher placed 2nd in District and 3rd in State Skills USA Electrical Technologies and Vincent Arispe placed 3rd in Technical Drafting competition. (Arispe as well as G. Richard Morgan and Joshua D.J. Friedman all ranked in the top 10 in Technical Drafting category in Texas.)

Goal IV. Capacity to Serve
The Board of Trustees approved Martin Ortega as Director of Admissions. He previously served as Assistant Director of Admission and then Associate Director of Residency and Reports at San Antonio College. Previously, he was Education Support Specialist at St. Philip’s College-Southwest Campus and worked for SER-Jobs for Progress.

Goal V. Organizational Communications
On April 3, San Antonio College held it’s 11th Annual Health Fest. This free event for students, faculty, staff, and the community offered valuable health information, demonstrations, and door prizes. To promote the event, Deborah Martin from the Public Relations Office appeared on Great Day SA, KENS 5, with Medin Barreira from the Kinesiology Department, who demonstrated self-defense.
