Update from the Chancellor

Goal I. Access to Higher Education
ACCD received a $50,000 commitment from Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union to establish a Northeast Lakeview College Founder’s Scholarship Fund and a $5,000 commitment from Firstmark Credit Union for the same purpose.

The Cowboy Breakfast Association presented the ACCD Foundation with a check for $10,000 earmarked for five scholarships for the Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Arts at St. Philip’s College. As a community service and for many years, the SPC Culinary Arts faculty and students have assisted the Cowboy Breakfast Association prepare food for the annual Cowboy Breakfast.

Goal III. Workforce Development
The Central Texas Technology Center (CTTC) is obtaining Manufacturing Skills Standards Council (MSSC) test site certification. MSSC site capability will allow students to pursue a nationally recognized production technician certification in manufacturing. The CTTC is also pursuing additional testing and certification capabilities for manufacturing and other trade areas and will soon seek certification from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

There are 97 individuals on a waiting list pending eligibility to participate in the Dept of Labor production worker program at the Westside Education Training Center (WETC). WETC enrollment to date totals 807 students.

Mrs. Teresa Mcpherson, SPC, has been selected as a Test Item writer for the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). These writers develop test items for the National State Boards for the NCLEX-PN and NCLEX-RN. Mrs. McPherson's skills as an item writer will assist St. Philip's Nursing faculty to develop tests more in line with the current NCLEX test plans.

Mr. Jorge Trevino, Director of Workforce Training, met with Mr. Curtis Thomas from Mooney Aviation to develop customized training programs to deliver at their plant in Fredericksburg, Texas. The year long training program will be supported by a skills development grant being prepared by Southwest Campus.

Goal IV. Capacity to Serve
As part of the ACCD Nursing Task Force initiative, the Professional, Technical and Workforce Education staff met with appropriate program deans to review current hiring practices for nursing faculty at SPC and SAC in order to develop recommendations to recruit additional nursing faculty.

Approximately 2,000 invitations were printed for the Construction Design Exposition to be held April 19 at the Depot at Sunset Station. The “Delivering the Dream-Alamo Community Colleges Design Exposition” will feature exhibits of the construction projects approved by voters in the bond referendum of November 2005. It is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The exposition will allow the public to view the designs of various buildings at the colleges, and will demonstrate that we are on time, on target, and on budget and fulfilling our promise in our CIP. Tom C. Frost and B. J. “Red” McCombs are Honorary Co-Chairpersons of the event.

Members of the ACCD administrative leadership attended a two-day Baldrige Workshop held at SPC. The workshop provided an overview of the Baldrige System and addressed an actionable approach to address improvements at each one of the Alamo Community Colleges and establish leadership excellence. Sessions were also held introducing the process improvement method, FOCUS PDCA. This method is a continuous improvement model that provides a systematic approach to process improvement.
