| Goal II. Student Success
Northeast Lakeview College held its first annual Career Fair on April 23rd. Over ten employers from the area attended the event and were able to meet with students looking for full-time, part-time, and seasonal summer employment. Students had the ability to fill out employment applications and submit resumes. A few employers also gave on-the spot interviews.

Dr. Beth Lewis, Vice-President of Academic Affairs, and Dr. Cindy Griffith, Dean of Workforce Development and Continuing Education, recently traveled to Texas Tech University for a visit with administrators and faculty regarding information, ideas, and possible articulation of potential workforce programs. The visit provided further understanding of each program’s feasibility for NLC with regard to industry need, curriculum, business partnerships, advanced degrees, and facilities.
Goal IV. Capacity To Serve
To commemorate Earth Day, Northeast Lakeview College held a week long recycling project. From April 10 – 18th, boxes were placed near trash receptacles in hallways and major student traffic areas to collect cans and plastic. The boxes were emptied daily, and at the conclusion of the project, Northeast Lakeview College collected over 350 gallons of used cans and plastic. Northeast Lakeview College hopes to initiate a formal recycling program on its campus.

Goal II. Student Success
Plans have been finalized for a unique opportunity for NVC students to study abroad in Spain this summer. The courses offered include Intermediate Spanish and World Cultures. Classes will be held at the Centro le Lenguas e Intercambio Cultural in Seville, Spain, the leading Spanish language school in the city. Over a three-week period, students will share flats with Spaniards, take classes with other international students, and participate in numerous cultural activities and excursions organized by the school. Students registered for six credit hours are eligible to apply for a scholarship through the Alamo Community Colleges.
Goal IV. Capacity To Serve
Over the past year, a safety team has been working to improve the college’s preparedness in emergency situations including the completion of a Safety Manual that is available at our website. In addition, a Crisis Action Team (CAT), consisting of key decision-makers on our campus, began meeting on a monthly basis to work through our responses to specific emergencies and how we can improve overall safety on the campus.
Goal V. Organizational Communication
In an effort to increase student engagement and the promotion of campus events, the Public Relations team along with IT has created several online calendars that can be updated by specific content managers. Events can be targeted to a single area or the entire NVC community.

Goal I. Access To Higher Education
PAC’s Dean of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences is Chairing the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame Scholarship Committee. Community College students are eligible to apply for $20,000 in scholarship funds available this year. The committee will select from among 196 applicants and award the scholarships at a brunch at the Oak Hills Country Club, June 9.

PAC’s Counseling and Psychology Departments sponsored a workshop on “Child Abuse Prevention Strategies” in recognition of Child Abuse Awareness Month, April 19. Conrad Gonzales Jr., an educator for Any Baby Can, Inc., focused his workshop on parenting strategies, and discussed the effects of Shaken Baby Syndrome.

PAC student Cindy Waterhouse organized a “Celebration of Life” memorial service for the victims of the Virginia Tech tragedy, April 23. The service was held in the campus’ “Free Speech” area and featured speakers, songs and the release of 32 orange and white balloons with the names of each fallen Virginia Tech student. The event received radio and television coverage.

Goal I. Access To Higher Education
St. Philip’s College hosted over 400 Tech Prep students on April 24, 2006 in order to facilitate their matriculation efforts. Students were from Northside ISD, Wagner High School (Judson ISD), Hawkins High School, Clemens High School, and Harlandale ISD. Students had an opportunity to learn about program offerings, career pathways, and support services at St. Philip’s College. The students spent the day visiting SPC and concluded with lunch on campus. The College awarded five $1000 scholarships to the visiting high school students.

The St. Philip's College Learning Disabilities Specialist is working with the Web Site Accessibility Policy Committee, chaired by Dr. Julia Briggs, to review and update policies and procedures reflecting current case laws. Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 was passed in 2006 to ensure that all communication modalities are accessible to all citizens including telephone, media, websites, closed captioning, textbooks, etc. The SPC committee has taken the lead in the District to ensure that our website and our distance education courses are completely accessible. St. Philip’s College will host: The Role of Disabilities Services in Accommodating Students On-Line Webinar on, Tuesday, May 22, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Webinar will be presented by Jane Jarrow, nationally known professional and advocate for individuals with disabilities and former President of the Association of Higher Education and Disabilities.
On April 19, St. Philip’s College hosted a Transfer Fair with twenty-one area colleges and universities attending. Over 100 students attended the fair and received information regarding transferring to four-year institutions.

Twenty students participated in and completed the Alamo Work Source Job Coaching/Pre-vocational Services Program on Friday, April 20. Students received certificates of completion at a ceremony at St. Philip's College - Southwest Campus. SPC President, Dr. Adena Williams Loston, was the guest speaker.

Skanska USA Building, Inc., hosted an early morning breakfast for Women, Minority, and Small Business Owners on Tuesday April 17. The purpose of the meeting was to introduce the process of getting involved with the Skanska bond construction efforts at St. Philip’s College. A presentation was given by Chris Carruth, Vice President of Skanska, and was attended by some 65 interested individuals. Mr. Carruth made a similar presentation on Wednesday, April 18, to the Hispanic Contractors Association with some 40 individuals in attendance.
Sara Kirby completed and submitted two grant proposals, one to the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for tuition assistance for the truck-driving curriculum offered by SPC’s Continuing Education Department, and the second to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for training of early childhood educators working in high-need areas.
Efforts continue to be made to keep the SPC community aware, informed, and involved in the migration to the new ACCD Web server and the conversion to the new SPC Web site. Numerous emails were sent to SPCALL and SWCALL with the latest information on these two projects. In addition, the Web masters are making individual phone calls and sending targeted emails to keep people informed

The SPC Web Accessibility Committee is developing the accessibility policy for the new Web site. Texas state law requires that all institutions of higher education post their Web site accessibility policy. The Web site accessibility policy, like those mentioned above, will be approved by the SPC Director of Public Information and by the SPC President.

I. Access to Higher Education
San Antonio College held its 13th Annual Multicultural Conference, featuring literary presentations, film viewings, poetry readings, and musical performances on the theme “Fear and Loathing: The springboards of Modern Culture.”
The Scobee Planetarium and the San Antonio Astronomical Association celebrated National Astronomy Day by co-hosting an Observing Session last weekend near the San Antonio College Observatory in the adjacent parking lot. Two dozen telescopes were set up, and the large telescope in the observatory was open to the public. Views of the craters on the Moon, the planets Saturn and Venus, and other targets were available to people free of charge.

The Nursing Education Department held a Convocation for faculty and students, including a discussion of the Red Cross and epidemiology by Metro Health and a demonstration of a response to Pandemic Flu by Red Cross representatives. Also, a hazmat team demonstrated emergency vehicles “going into the hot zone.” About 300 students were present, and the Public Relations office brought two TV crews and one radio station to cover this event.

The Continuing Education Training Network has announced the new Medical Coding program, which prepares students for the highly specialized Certified Coding Specialist certificate in demand by medical employers. The five-month program begins August 13, with registration now in progress. The program includes job placement leads through Leading Edge Personnel, Bexar County Medical Society, Baptist Medical Center, Santa Rosa Centre, and University Hospital System.

The San Antonio College Early Childhood Centercelebrated the National Week of the Young Child with a week of activities, including encouragement of parents to express their hopes and dreams for their children, TV Turn-Off Week, Parent Appreciation Day, Wear or Make a Hat Day, Teacher/Administrator/Grandparent Appreciation Day, Bring Your Child’s Favorite Book to School Day, and Visiting Read Mary Zeigler. Culminating these events was the presentation of the Norma Ziegler Child Development Award of $200 going to Jessica Lynn Carrillo, and the Norma L. Ziegler Scholarship Award of $250 each going to Vangie Habib, Mary Jane Rodriguez, Lisa Pickaree-Woodard, and Griselda Perez. This ceremony will be followed by the annual Fiesta sidewalk parade with children wearing fiesta colors.
