Update from the Chancellor
Leslie
Dr. Bruce H. Leslie

Goal I. Access to Higher Education
On 1/23, the Port San Antonio announced the award of $139,000 to SPC for aerospace workforce training. The funds will be used to train incumbent employees of Chromalloy Component Services, Chromalloy Power Services, Standard Aero, and Lockheed Martin.

The student selection criteria for the Early College High School was approved at the Judson ISD Board meeting on January 17th. Dr. Eric Reno, Dr. Beth Lewis, vice president for academic affairs and Debbie Hamilton, vice president for student services, represented the college; the high school will open for classes in Fall 2009.

Institutional Advancement reports that the final $10,000 gift was received for the Madla Scholarship fund, completing all gift commitments. The aggregate corpus of the endowment is $55,000.

Goal II. Student Support
SAC Mortuary Science student Dr. Howard Anderson is President of the San Antonio Branch NAACP, whom he recently addressed as a part of “Celebrating Citizen Diplomacy: Our Country/Our City.” He is also an ordained minister and the Director of Diversified Spiritual Associates.

Two former SAC students were featured in the Jan. 18 issue of Today’s Catholic: Gloria Delgado on the occasion of taking the helm of the Catholic Community Foundation and Velia Gonzalez for her ministry to the homeless pregnant women and mothers with infants at Guadalupe Home.

Goal III. Workforce Development
Dr. Federico Zaragoza, Dr. John Soto, Brad Hunt, and Belkiss Rodriguez conducted a three-day Workforce Certification and Organizational Development Seminar for the National SER Jobs For Progress Corporate staff in Dallas Texas. The workshop was delivered under contract and rated exceptional by the participants. National SER is considering replicating the training for all of its national affiliates and over 1,000 employees.

The ACCD Foundation received $25,000 from Alamo Work Source to support the Dream It! Do It! Campaign effort as part of our partnership with the SA Manufacturers Association.

Goal IV. Capacity To Serve
A retirement reception was held this afternoon for Dr. Eduardo Conrado, District Director of International Programs. Mariachi’s and a group of international students performed for Dr. Conrado in appreciation for his commitment to the program and to ACCD. Dr. Conrado is highly regarded, as noted by the many faculty, staff, and students who shared testimonials on his behalf.

NVC was recognized by the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center for extraordinary commitment to the success of the blood drives at NVC. In 2007, NVC staff, faculty and students donated 759 units including 83 units at a special emergency drive. The Center recognized John Seimetz, NVC Coordinator of College Center, Sharon Dresser, Special Services Manager and Daniel Clark, Learning Disability Specialist, for their support of the blood drives.

SPC played an integral role in the city-wide MLK celebration on 1/21. One event they hosted was the 2008 Youth Hip Hop Summit, an educational element of the program sponsored by the City of San Antonio. The event drew more than 700 people to the Campus; staff obtained information from 400 prospective students.

PAC opened the ACORN Tax Preparation Center on campus in the Ozuna Learning Resource Center foyer, providing qualifying community members with information on Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and an opportunity to file taxes electronically for faster refunds. On average, 2,100 returns are completed at the PAC location, with $1.75 million in EITC and $4 million in total refunds going back to the community.

Goal V. Organizational Communication
SAC partnered with the Alamo Forest Partnership to host some of the 5th Annual Arbor Day Celebration activities on January 26 at San Pedro Park. Free trees were given to the first 250 people who took a brief tree education class, and a spade transplant took place at SAC.

We have an increasing number of events and activities district-wide and are taking the opportunity to showcase such events on Time Warner Cable channel 98 and Grande cable channel 21. This section of the Chancellor’s Weekly Report provides a schedule of the programming for our regularly scheduled times of 12 – 2 pm on Saturday and 9 – 11 am on Sunday. Programming varies due to the timing of Board and committee meetings, groundbreaking ceremonies, etc. The programming for the coming weekend is as follows:
