Update from the Chancellor
Leslie
Dr. Bruce H. Leslie

Goal I. Access to Higher Education
Dr. Zeigler, San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) Superintendent Dr. Roberto Durón, and representatives of UTSA met with approximately 30 representatives from SAC and SAISD to discuss establishing an Early College High School by the first class day on August 25, 2008.

Two guests from Denmark visited SAC to discuss programs in the Business Department and how their college might collaborate with SAC in order to have future student and faculty exchanges.

Goal II. Student Support
Former PAC student Eliab Chavira was featured for his achievements in academic excellence in Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and Biomedical Science newsletter entitled “CVM Today.” The article highlight’s PAC 2+2 program with A&M and the foundation it provided Chavira.

As part of the effort to address the digital divide, thirteen NVC students were recently awarded free computers for their personal use. NVC Information Technology faculty and staff members personally purchased old computers, used their technical expertise to refurbish the equipment, and then donated the computers to students who could not otherwise afford them. By year's end, the faculty and staff hope to reconstruct 28 computers and monitors for students' personal use.

Goal III. Workforce Development
The ACCD Board of Trustees and City of San Antonio City Council approved a $100,000 allocation to support the newly established Greater Bexar P-16 Plus Council. Dr. Bruce Leslie is one of the core members of the P-16 Plus Council.

Sixty-two individuals are participation in a Middle College model at the WETC in partnership with Edgewood Independent School District.

Goal IV. Capacity To Serve
ACCD DPS provided the following update of the SPC November 2006 aggravated robbery of a female student: The individual who was identified by DPS investigation as the person responsible entered a guilty plea to the crime and received a 20 year prison sentence with a requirement to serve a minimum of 10 years before being eligible for parole. Case closed.

The Request for Proposals (RFP) for contract housekeeping services at several new locations was prepared. Due to the demands for quality care of current facilities and with new buildings coming online, ACCD is faced with the challenge of hiring sufficient housekeeping staff. Outsourcing is being considered as an option; meetings have been held with staff councils and users to keep Faculty and Staff informed on upcoming changes.

Goal V. Organizational Communication
San Antonio Express-News Art Critic Dan R. Goddard describes PAC’s Gallery100 as providing “the far South Side with its first well-designed, non-profit art space.” PAC’s Fine Arts Department’s exhibition of “What are you doing?” featuring works by Nate Cassie and Ethel Shipton, was featured in Goddard’s blog.

A reception was held by the San Antonio Black History Month Calendar to launch Black History Month in San Antonio for 2008. The event was held at SPC and Dr. Loston welcomed members of the community and City Councilmember Sheila McNeil to the Campus.

We have an increasing number of events and activities district-wide and are taking the opportunity to showcase such events on Time Warner Cable channel 98 and Grande cable channel 21. This section of the Chancellor’s Weekly Report provides a schedule of the programming for our regularly scheduled times of 12 – 2 pm on Saturday and 9 – 11 am on Sunday. Programming varies due to the timing of Board and committee meetings, groundbreaking ceremonies, etc. The programming for the coming weekend is as follows:
