Alamo Community Colleges Invited to Submit ESL Proposal to Japanese College

The Alamo Community Colleges have been invited to submit a proposal to the Tohoku Foreign Language College in Japan. The proposal is to provide an intensive English as a Second Language program for 40 to 100 students. The program will also include cultural and tourist activities. If our proposal is selected, the students would arrive in November and December. he Office of International Programs, in cooperation with Northwest Vista College, Palo Alto College, and San Antonio College, is finalizing a comprehensive proposal to bring Japanese students to San Antonio for intensive English language instruction. Representatives from the colleges met last week to discuss a common curriculum for the program.

Ceremony Honors 64 Westside Education and Training Center Graduates

Sixty four (64) West Side Education and Training (WETC) students completed workforce certificate programs in Medical Front Office, Community Health Worker, Production Worker, and Emergency Medical Technicians. Approximately 150 guests attended the graduation ceremony at the WETC.

Chancellor, Board Members Attend ACC Legislative Conference

Mr. Leo Zuniga attended Association of Community Colleges Annual Legislative conference with Dr. Leslie and five board members to promote community colleges legislative priorities and federal support for programs.

Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee Tours SAC Parking Garage

On Monday, February 11, 2008, the 2005 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee met at San Antonio College. The Committee received an update on all CIP projects and had tours of the recently completed Parking Garage.

Student Leadership Institute Hosts Conference

The Alamo Community Colleges Student Leadership Institute hosted the 1st annual Young Leaders Conference at San Antonio College Saturday, February 23, 2008. The conference included over 300 participants, including Student Leadership Institute Tier I college students and over 175 high school seniors and juniors and their parents. Mr. Aerate and Dr. Robert Ziegler welcomed the participants and parents. Keynote speaker, Janie Martinez Gonzalez, E-Myth Entrepreneur of the Year, motivated and inspired many with her powerful words of wisdom. Ten students received a $1,000 scholarship to attend the Alamo Community College of their choice. Conference sessions (40) were presented by SLI Tier II students and ACCD ALAS participants. Exhibitors included all ACCD college and program representatives. Planning Committee members included all SCPD staff and college representatives district-wide.

This Weekend on Cable TV

We have an increasing number of events and activities district-wide and are taking the opportunity to showcase such events on Time Warner Cable channel 98 and Grande cable channel 21. This section of the Chancellor’s Weekly Report provides a schedule of the programming for our regularly scheduled times of 12 – 2 pm on Saturday and 9 – 11 am on Sunday. Programming varies due to the timing of Board and committee meetings, groundbreaking ceremonies, etc. The programming for the coming weekend is as follows:
